That isn’t theoretical computer science. In this day and age, that’s firmly in the hands of engineers. And while AI might be the current big thing, I don’t imagine it will be at the forefront of engineering. I think quantum computing takes

Palindromes are hard and place severe limitations on what can be written. So the skill is impressive - but it doesn’t change the fact that the end result is absolutely naff. It’s just equally naff in two directions.

That would be what I’d care about the most. Smaller file size, but not an order of magnitude difference? Meh. Easier for the browser to process? Well that’s going to have a tonne of useful ramifications. Honestly that’s what annoys me about

As a completely uneducated guess, I’d argue more cameras of decent quality, and more of them with motion detection etc. There’s certainly a case for the more cameras argument, though it doesn’t apply to this specific event: almost every UK

No guarantees, but the chances are different. Say you’ve been working somewhere for 5 years and have the opportunity to move to a company - and you know both companies are laying people off at some point soon. In your current company, maint

9 would be far too high IMHO. If you’re laying people off, say it straight and with a backbone. The language is passive, weak and makes it sound like a mere consequence of a slight breeze upon a dainty leaf causing it to gently fall from a

A language model cannot, by itself, figure that out, at least not to arbitrary complex inputs. But it’s a fairly sweeping statement to say that AI cannot do it.

See, this is the difference between a productive engineer and a purist. You are a productive engineer. You see a fast library that needs a different encoding, so your first thought is to add a transcoding step and make a 2x gain in a short

This was very informative. I’ve been using Nix far longer than Julia and I have endured many battles with mkDerivation, never thinking to go one step deeper. I knew that it was a wrapper over a builtin derivation, but I never realised just

Syntactically, I find cppfront gorgeous . However, I’d like to have seen more emphasis on safety by design, rather than safety by excluding things. I think it’s definitely easier to get it in at this stage of cppfront’s development than it

Exactly! And yet Rust gets a reputation of safety: the boundary between safe and unsafe is formal, and that opens up huge possibilities for metrics, compliance, and targeted testing. That’s what I’d shoot for.

Any successor to C++ will necessarily need to be built around safety from day one. Carbon did not do that - it merely hopes to put safety in at a later stage. So no, I don’t think Carbon will replace C++. I will be very surprised if a C++ s

Close to the metal doesn’t mean “I can create an operation that I could do in assembly, and it compiles to that assembly”. It doesn’t necessarily mean “fast”, either. If that were the case all compiled and optimised native languages would c

I’m no rustacean, but I agree - for vastly different reasons, though. A type having similar algebraic properties to a set of assembly instructions isn’t what being close to the metal is about. It isn’t a thought experiment or learning exper

Ah, point taken. I’m new here so I didn’t realise that was done to death. On the philosophy point - there is a great deal of use in philosophy within computer science and any other field I can think of. But categorising things for the sake

I currently use OpenSCAD for hobby projects. I’m very much a beginner at it, having used it for about 2 weeks, but so far it has been a very shallow learning curve. In terms of an ecosystem it’s quite good, but the language frustrates me. I

Clippy [2001] claims that the philosophy of computer science is “it looks like you’re writing nonsense, would you like help with that?”. Bing [2023] counteracts that with “It is not nonsense, it is 2022. You have been a bad Clippy, I have b
