The EPA values one human life at $10M. A conservative estimate of the number of people killed by the Sackler family's companies (testified in court) was ~~245,000~~ Edit: probably at least 100,000, see below. So if opiates were environ

Legislation is reactive rather than proactive, slow in its reaction, easily corrupted by lobbyists, and likely contains loopholes anyway. Not to mention that competent regulation acts as a barrier to entry for competitors.

You don't seem fully serious, but the writing is probably on the wall for third party tools which integrate with GMail. I use InboxZero through Beeminder, and could see Beeminder being locked out.

It feels like Google search is already curated. At home I cannot find academic articles which appeared in the search at work, because my girlfriend trained the home's recommendation engine on searches for cute cat pictures and domestic

Setting preferences really should not be shocking, given that they have the capacity to run automatic updates. I'm more surprised that they can push code without certificates.

Global Entry is a TSA program you can apply for. The TSA charges a fee of 100 USD and runs an in person interview. Edit: those under investigation, warrants, or charged with crimes are not elligible. Neither are those with passports from

I think part of the issue is that tech salaries are insane in SF and NYC, everywhere else and every other field salaries are not increasing. I was looking at engineering postdocs and the typical salary is 50k. For bio postdocs it's 35k

The problem is not jargom, it is tone. If we criticize the ideas instead of the people we can reach an understanding. But by using "you" it becomes more personal and more inflammatory.

Of the pictures at the top of the article, almost every bedroom captioned as being in an underground bunker had a window visible in the frame. One of them had something that looked like the door to a residential apartment next to that windo

My impression is that the relevant laws for crash liability are those of Indonesia and Ethiopia. So nobody professional is clamoring for it. The silence of the pundit class is curious; I guess we will find out how political this in the next

That's a terrible show of confidence. What are the chances that the next plane to have an accident is carrying the CEO? What is the average expected punishment to the CEO for getting it wrong? It's probably less risk than BASE jum

To be fair, "just nuke afghanistan" was a phrase I heard several times in 2001. Maybe 10% of the US population would have welcomed use of nukes. More, if it had been packaged as part of with-us-or-against-us rhetoric.

This seems like a PR piece. Too positive, a lot of discussions of pilot's smiles. Given the very high program costs and the need by Lockheed Martin to convince US allies to buy the plane despite the high price tag, I think HN readers w

But alcohol consumption is ridiculously evolutionarily beneficial. The ability to digest ethanol has evolved independently twice, and each time it swept to dominate ~95 percent of the population in less than 500 years.

Not really. A TI-class supertanker has a length of 380m, breadth of 68m, for a surface area of less than 7 acres, and run on a 37,450 kW engine. (Wikipedia). Meanwhile, a 50 MW solar installation in Ohio takes 500 acres of space.( https:&#x

Temporal smear is caused by the varying refeactive index of glass with wavelength and the fact that a short time pulse must have finite (large) spectral width (by the uncertainty principle), not by the bouncing.

That's not true. The typical total reflection angle in single mode fiber optic cable is less than 4 degrees. The refractice index of glass, however, is about 1.45. So almost all the slowdown is due to the glass directly slowing down th

How much text content does an active user produce over 6 months? Most uers lurk, so the average user is probably producing a few hundred kilobytes of text. That adds up (and compresses) to only a few gigabytes.
