With power query, named tables, linked data types, lambdas, and xlookup, you can hack structs into excel, letting you write `Person("John").age` in formulas.

It's not a perfect solution to your problem, but you can simplify multistep calculations with LET. So it would be: LET(X, A1, Y, X*2, Y+1) I just checked and the Evaluate Formula button can sequentially step through a LET. Tho

In excel you can convert any range into a dedicated table object, which lets you give it a proper name, select rows/columns (with ctrl/shift+space), and use column names in formula (with `tablename[columnname]`). You can also load

This is an argument against taxonomic classification, not categories per se. In Wikipedia, pages can belong to multiple categories, and categories can have multiple parent categories. It's more complex than single hierarchical taxonomi

An example off the top of my head would be writing a serializer/deserializer pair and explicitly saying they are inverses of each other, as opposed to having to implicitly say that in a round-trip property test. Another idea would be b

I don't need you to be able to deduce what the J is doing. What I need is to write the computation as fast as possible so I can get the answer I need to know and then get back to whatever else I was doing. If I was writing something

Forgetting about SPARK was a big whoops for me. (Lots of formal verification languages are based on contracts, like SPARK, Frama-C, and Dafny. I'm interested in uses for contracts that aren't just formal verification, though!)

Liquid Haskell is much closer to contracts than Idris, if you haven't heard of that already. I'm interesting in exploring contracts independently of types, though.

Languages like Dafny and Ada show that you can contracts are great for augmenting a good type system by letting you express really complicated invariants that are tough to express in types. I didn't include them because they're

Dafny is a really fun language and I've done some stuff in it before. I was really sad when MSR stopped working on it, but I think AWS has picked up the slack?

Fun followup: turns out that `__subclasshook__` interacts with the new pattern matching. I'm writing a short piece on that now.

I've written about this before! https://www.hillelwayne.com/post/tla-golang/ That said, I think the Spin syntax is slightly closer to native Go, making it easier to write specs. At least that's what pe

Part of the problem is that there's a difference between having the skill of math and having the skill of applying math to real-world problems, and the latter 1) isn't taught, and 2) is really hard to teach.
