There's no way that real memory allocation is faster in C# than in C++. I don't know much about the CLR, but if it appears to allocate memory faster, it is probably because it is taking the memory from a pool which it has already allocated

Same here. Basically, I don't want music while I'm in the process of figuring out how to go about doing something, but there's nothing better than a good beat (Infected Mushroom for me) while actually doing it. When I'm doing design, m

My grandad runs a local auto shop, and I would have been hard-pressed to not learn how to repair my car. I did all kinds of work on my '83 Ford Ranger, and a good amount of work on my '90 Daytona, but I've gotta say that I'm a bit afraid

I always thought the moniker "time travel" was not specific enough. I'm traveling through time right now. I can't help but travel through time. Maybe a more appropriate term would be "time navigator."

Unless the poster's clientele consists solely of HN readers, they would probably end up getting different results.

Yeah, some ads are definitely over the top. For the most part, I could survive without AdBlockPlus, but there is one type of ad that I detest more than any other: the audio ad. I can't even find words to describe how severely I detest adv

According to POSIX, after a SIGSEGV, the state of the program is undefined. This is the reason that a SIGSEGV usually causes an immediate abort. Allowing a program to execute when its state is undefined is a huge security hole.

Command-restricted users are NOT the SSH default. If the sysadmin is taking the trouble to restrict the user's privileges, they need to restrict forwarding as well. By the argument that you and others make, the SSH server should not allow

Actually, I read the full article and not "one throwaway line." The one line that I quoted is the crux of your argument against the implementor's decision to allow forwarding by default. Don't know what you mean by the "actual meat."

Allowing TCP forwarding by default is not "insecure." The author of the article states that the SSH manual's justification for leaving it enabled by default is not valid because, "have you ever tried to install a forwarder on some random s

The Starbucks naming conventions drive me crazy because of the fact that they all mean, essentially, "big." So it's impossible to remember which "big" you want for a medium-sized coffee!

Actually, most of the people I've met who campaign against GM are against it because they're scared of the concept of some mad scientist in a laboratory making abominable lettuce with "toxins" in it. Those are the people my "10,000" years

The thing I always like to point out to people who are against genetically modified foods is that breeding is genetic modification. Mankind has been genetically modifying plants for 10,000 years, to great effect, by performing artificial s

Maybe I'm too laid back, but I don't really get the impression that the DEA is trolling the Hacker News comments, recording usernames, sending subpoenas to ISPs, obtaining search warrants, and busting down doors. Somehow I just don't see a

I've found that I'm terrible at laying down code when I've been smoking. My short term memory goes down the drain, which makes it difficult to remember, e.g., variable and function names. However, I've also found that I'm quite good at ot

My take on this is that if you're not interested in the subject enough to learn it on your own, then you'll probably never gain a deep understanding of it. That's not to say that a formal education is bad -- it will just never be a substit

A real vaporizer is certainly smokeless. It vaporizes the oils in the marijuana bud; the marijuana is not supposed to burn. If you've used a vaporizer and it was producing smoke, that means that you had the heat turned up way too high.
