Iridium is in LEO, but the comms hardware itself is pretty slow (1 to 2+ seconds latency). The throughput is also very low (2 to 4 kbit/s). Iridium is a great low-cost, low-bandwidth network though.

> Do we yet have an airplane yet that can come close to the efficiency of the most clumsiest of the birds? Regardless of efficiency, we have certainly exceeded the range, cargo capacity, top speed, and passenger space of most birds. Simi

Actually an interesting idea. If the Starshot project [1] (which uses ground-based laser propulsion) gets off the ground, perhaps the system could be equally useful for de-orbiting space junk. Firing at orbital objects as they approach from

This article doesn't mention one of the major reasons for talent leaving Canada: if you work there, you need to stomach a 50% pay cut in average salaries vs the US. This is true pretty much across the board regardless of tech niche o

I really don't understand the dependency on hours of the clock. Would a student struggling in an 8am class in Pacific time suddenly excel if they moved to the East coast and went to 11am classes starting at the same moment? Is there an

Are document-specific replies part of current manual faxing technology? This seems like something that would depend on your own internal document management rather than the fax protocol itself.

What I like about the Lyft tipping model is that allows you to decide the (optional) tip after you have left the ride - when the driver says goodbye, they have no idea if you will or will not leave a tip. Removing the on-the-spot pressure o

A perfect vacuum still displays activity in the form of "vacuum energy" - a counterintuitive property of the universe where particles apparently blink into existence for a short duration in otherwise empty space. https:/

That's exactly correct. Consider the equation for kinetic energy: E = 1/2 m*v^2 The energy to go from 0-10 m/s is the difference in this value (for 1kg e.g.): dE = E1 - E0 = 1/2(10^2) - 1/2(0^2) = 50J

100% agreed. Coming to LA from Toronto, the biggest disappointment was the bus frequency. Toronto transit has some big problems, but on most routes you can get a transfer within 5-10 minutes. When you need to transfer on the LA Metro, it&#x
