While I agree that Kuhn's theory is pretty flawed, and only applicable to very rare cases, I really don't think that you can use "because David Deutsch said so" as an argument.

The endowment effect was controversial for years. The idea that a squishy, irrational bit of human behaviour could affect the cold, clean and rational world of markets was a challenge to neoclassical economists. Their assumption had always

The other big problem with the story: the two words don't just differ by the dots on the "i"s, they also appear to end with a different vowel.

Depends. If only one in every ten thousand cars has it, then it's not very useful. If one in every four cars has it, then you're getting a lot of useful information about traffic.

I agree with this. At the moment the "flag" link, which you want to use very rarely, is more prominent than the "comments" link, which you want to use often. Maybe changing the colours to make "comments" dark and "flag" light might work as

Yes, but what is considered kosher to report? 1. Blatant machine-generated spam? 2. Really nasty stuff? (child porn, incitement to violence) 3. Slightly nasty stuff? (ordinary porn, Rick Astley) 4. Slightly spammy stuff? (unjustifiable adve

My original comment may have been a bit harsh. I'm sure there's a lot of good people both in the faculty and in the student body. I actually don't know much about the CS department at all, so by all means listen to somebody else's opinion o

I think the best reason for not getting to know your neighbours is this: if it turns out they're annoying, it's hard to get away from them.

Hmm, I work at Davis and I wouldn't say it was particularly good for comp sci -- I think there are better options among the UCs. I wouldn't personally recommend Davis at the undergrad level for much except agricultural and life sciences.

I spent last week at UIUC and I was very impressed -- nice campus, good facilities, pleasant location, low cost of living, and an awful lot of very good research going on. I'd definitely stick it on the list.

I've seen a lot of university rankings, and I've never seen one that looked like that. If you had a link it would be useful, but pretty much every ranking I've seen has had Oxford and Cambridge as the two top British universities. Example:

I do own a K&R ANSI C, and i thought of reading it, but didn't find low level programing as fun as python. I will learn it eventually This is why I reckon it's better to learn C before you learn any of the higher-level scripting-type

Ruby really isn't sufficiently different from Python to make it a worthwhile third language, is it? Maybe a sixth or seventh language, after C, C++, Erlang, f77 and Assembly.

Definitely. I hate to sound like an old curmudgeon (especially since I'm only 28) but it's scary the number of people nowadays who call themselves programmers but have never even had to worry about allocating memory.

Is it really that impressive compared to the mirror in any of the world's largest telescopes? I mean, good work being built by students at low cost and all, but any serious observatory will have a mirror which is larger and a lot smoother.
