They're ugly because the market which was once (in, say, the 1980s) the "sneaker" market has segmented into two markets: casual sneakers, whose purpose is to look cool, and serious exercise shoes, whose purpose is exercise. Serious exercise

Ah, well that's fair enough then. But with only seven words to go from, it's rather hard to tell the difference between satire and the real thing.

The biggest problem that struck me was the reference to "The Man", reflective of the kind of paranoia that you find in the darker corners of the internet. Aside from that, the article can't really be blamed for the ensuing gold-standard deb

Further comment (because I've continued to play with it, because I think it's awesome): I've found a couple of tracks where the time (in green on the right as it plays) was given as "NaN:NaN". That's probably not a desired behaviour. (fwiw

Oh, I see, I've got it to work now. I was just clicking "add to playlist" and nothing was happening, but if you click on the name of the song it starts playing. In which case, very impressive. I'm particularly impressed that it even finds m

Inessential, yes. But I'm pretty sure that there are cases where knowing Assembly makes you a better C programmer. It lets you understand, for instance, why accessing the elements of an array in one order is faster than in another order. Or

I agree, this article is terrible. I do think quantum cryptography has a place, though, especially if they manage to demonstrate it in satellite-to-earth communications (which is what I assume this article is about, although I couldn't brin

The second (it's always the second). And you're right, I was wrong, the maximum efficiency of a power plant is more like 50%. Perhaps I was thinking of the efficiency of the turbines rather than the whole process.

Yep, 20% efficiency is pretty normal in an internal combustion engine. Burning the same fuel in a power plant, on the other hand, you can get 80-90% efficiency.

Personally I'd be happy to unlock my house the same way I unlock my car -- by pressing a button on a device in my pocket. Better still, it would be the same device. Better still, I wouldn't have to press the button at all, it would unlock a

Point one: the temperature of deep space isn't really all that well-defined. Point two: this isn't all that cold -- temperatures in the microkelvin range are routinely obtained in the lab. Admittedly, this is a pretty big thing to be coolin

How is "middle class" defined in that classification? In the US, for instance, you'd need to earn at least, say, (picking a random number without wanting to start arguments and well-it-depends-where-you-live threads) $35,000 a year to be 'm

The trouble with the word "denialist" is that it's not clear exactly what the denialist is denying. There are a bunch of different things which one could deny, ranging from the sensible-to-deny to the silly-to-deny.
