If there's any relevant point to be made here, it's that apparently some people really don't have anything better to do than watch a yard sign. I wonder if there's some way to harvest these attentive-moron-hours for some more useful purpose

The even-bigger problem, as I understand it, is that the nanotubes don't just have to be 30,000 km long, they also have to be more-or-less defect free.

Headline is both misleading and out-of-date anyway, since they've already decided to keep the article after a long debate (and in the meantime, an improvement of the article). The system works.

No you wouldn't. You'd just be focusing less on internet-based software businesses and more on biotech, cleantech, nanotech, and other hardware-type businesses.

1: The Palin email hacking wasn't a particularly big story in the US media either -- I don't recall seeing it as the top story on any newspaper, although admittedly it hasn't exactly been a slow news week. Overall the incident is a net win

I'm pretty sure that "the lock was poorly designed" has never successfully been used as a legal defence by a burglar, and that "but they were so easy to fool" has never successfully been used as a legal defence by a conman, so I'd be surpri

The final chapter almost seemed to me like he was writing under duress. Without wanting to spoil anything, it pretty much goes "Fine, you want an ending you bastards? Here's your fucking ending, they all fucking lived happily ever after. Ha

Oh I don't know, I think that "suitable punishments for computer criminals" is perfectly on-topic, as long as it's not too infected by boring politics.

Well, this settles the question, posted in an earlier thread, about whether the culprit was very very smart or very very stupid. (Unless, of course, this guy is innocent, in which case the real culprit was very very smart.) In other news, I

The ending was certainly different to his usual endings. While most of his books feel like the last chapter is missing, this one just feels like the second-to-last chapter is missing.

I'm willing to entertain, for the moment, the idea that some particularly high-energy collisions are capable of reaching back in time and preventing themselves from happening. But there are easier ways to do it than to reach weeks back in t

Did he actually build one? I haven't seen any indication that he did anything other than "design" one. And it's a lot easier to "design" a nanoscale device than it is to build one. I mean, I'm sure the kid is smart and all (and no doubt has

The best solar cells have something like 30% efficiency at the moment. Even if he boosted it by 1% it would be impressive. At the moment I've got no idea what he _actually_ did. Obviously, parts of this story are complete BS (e.g. 500 times
