Sharing rides with strangers is precisely the kind of thing that I'd hope to avoid by replacing public transport with self-driving cars. But anyway, yes, it does appear that the economics of the self-driving taxi beat the economics o

Let's make some generous assumptions -- a taxi costs $20K, lasts 300,000 miles, gets 50 miles to the gallon and fuel costs $2.00 a gallon. (Or equivalent, electrically, I'm easy.) Then fuel is four cents a mile and depreciation is

Rejecting something because you can't afford it, and then claiming it's because it's "inauthentic", sounds fairly punk to me.

Really? How do you know this? I thought that our knowledge about how things are stored in the brain was extremely poor. It seems that we do have some pretty specialised mechanisms in our heads for dealing with human faces, given how good we

I think it missed the broader point that there's many reasons you'd want to endlave others apart from economic reasons or "power for its own sake". Altruism, for instance. Who among us doesn't want to make the works

If you want to bump up the number of traffic fatalities, encouraging cycling is a pretty good way to do it. Every major injury I've ever had has come from cycling and before you blame cars -- none involved a collision with a car.

Another day, another article filled with twenty something single professionals who don't own cars because they live in a 600 square foot apartment in a dense downtown core for $4000 a month saying "Why can't everybody be more

Statistically if it's never once happened to me it's unlikely that it happens to millions of people a month. I'm not sure where you're getting your information from.

I'd lived in the US for about five years before I bothered to get a credit rating. I remember when I was renting an apartment the agent looked shocked that I didn't have one. "How can you not have a credit rating? Don't
