Oh boy, here we go... Norm Matloff's H1B web page should be required reading for anyone who wants to discuss this: http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/h1b.html He definitely falls on one side of the issue, but he's the leading academic research

Good article, but it's a bit of a straw man argument. Supreme Court opinions have a distinctive style that tends towards plain English. You can pick almost any opinion (majority or dissenting) at random and a layman will be able to follow a

Wikipedia is a great first stop for almost every subject under the sun--except for medical issues and mathematics. In both those cases, it seems like procrastinating medical students or math grad students try to out-do each other with more

I think Salon's editor messed up the title of the article (and, by extension, the HN title). The article describes recent trials for psilocybin and MDMA, not LSD. There were certainly LSD trials in the '60s but if there have been some recen

The University of Leicester website on the dig ( http://www.le.ac.uk/richardiii/archaeology/wherewedug.html ) shows that they were able to determine exactly where the remains should have been buried. Pretty amazing.

I'm always wary of claims of "reverse discrimination" but I honestly can't think of a reason that, all else being equal (important caveat), that a PhD program would pick an American over a foreign student. Seems like the foreigner would be

The biggest problem R faces is the corrosive attitude the language developers and maintainers have towards the R community. The R core team sometimes seems openly hostile to users; instead of Benevolent-Dictator-for-Life, it's more of a mil

Five grand a year is probably too extreme, that's less than $15/day. But $15k/year is definitely doable with a $400K nest egg. 16 million households in the U.S. survive on less than that and most of them have to work to do so.
