Exception is also a result of supporting recoverable allocation/construction failures, IMO. When you need to support a failable Vec::new, what will be the type of its Error? There are two choices in this case: a) wrap underlying errors

C++'s move constructor can throw exceptions. An example would be moving a linked list, and the allocation of dummy tail node can fail. In my opinion, the design choice to support recoverable allocation failure in C++ reasons for most o

Exactly. New design makes it much easier to be used by non-advanced users like your mom or nephew. They are often ignored in the context of HN discussions and seldom voice for themselves, but they did consist a large portion of user base.

Just curious: which compilers according to your statement are designed for extreme performance? I know at the very right of the compilation time/performance axis lies SAT-based "super optimizers", but what lies between super

Sometimes I feel many comparisons against LLVM's performance is somewhat unfair: You can easily reach -O0/-O1 performance of LLVM with much simpler infrastructure and only a limited number of cheap passes, which leads to a conside

Another issue is that in real world types in fast programs usually can't be expressed and auto checked by a simple type system without mental/runtime overhead. For example, in many GPU kernels each thread visits patterns like (ax

There are always trade-offs. I mean when I'm writing really low-level stuffs (e.g., optimizing matrix multiplication kernels) I frequently find type system annoying. In that case I would definitely prefer C/asm, because they are s

The true negative in the post has been fixed. Rust also doesn't prevent all dangling references as long as you depend on some unsafe third-party library/external library/libc calls and use them in an improper way.

We use -D_GLIBCXX_DEBUG which automatically checks subscript access to vectors. Raw pointer usages are restricted to local (within a class/function) non-owning cases.
