Browsers have discrepancies too of course. Here's an interesting Chromium bug I've been following: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=125253... and an associated WHATWG discussion

Some reasons to understand the textual representation, besides curiousity: You are embedding a WASM engine and want to better grok how the import or exporting works. You are writing a compiler that targets WASM.

I know it's an appeal to authority, but if clang does it at high optimization levels then that's good enough for me to know it's faster. Division is really really slow in CPUs, as I understand it. Like, CPUs are just awful at

Thanks, that was a silly oversight. Your comment is appreciated, as it saved an instruction in my game engine's JIT compilation :) https://github.com/ArmageddonGames/ZQuestClassic/commit/0a78...

For some context, the Jagex reboot "Old School Runescape" (OSRS) forked from a circa-2007 build of the game. It was apparently a stroke of luck that they still had the source code. Notably, the 2007 version was before huge changes

There's literally zero external capability given to WASM in the browser. It must call out to JavaScript to interact with Web APIs. There simply is nothing to hide.

Likely no, but a kid isn't going to be learning low level systems programming in highschool. Their entry point into the world is programming is going to be high-level, as that has less barrier to entry. My point is that kids in the 80s

The number of layers added to modern programming and computer systems has gone up significantly since the 80s. It's sensible to claim that a kid from the 80s had far less to learn to be effective in the world of the 80s, than a 20s kid
