Would a TB-PCIe enclosure like the Sonnet ones not cut it? I get that it's still easier to have PCIe built in, but that's a big premium to pay.

I don't know. Can't imagine it's easy to sell a used Windows laptop directly to begin with, and those big resellers probably offer very little. Even refurbished Dell Latitudes seem to go for cheap on eBay. I've had an ea

The CPUs with iGPUs didn't also have the memory on-chip. The Nintendo 64 did. Not sure about the old home computers, but I thought those had separate memory usually.

You can do that more cheaply with separate machines. The use case for this mega one really is monolothic DB or server.

They put the M1 into the desktops too

Intel desktop options are quite simple. My only complaint is on laptops, where the i3, i5, i7 thing conflicts with U vs H, and almost seems intentionally misleading. Like, why does i7-U even exist? But the nice thing is you search the model

The M3 vs M4 thing makes sense, but pro vs ultra vs max is ???

Well that's what (s)he meant, the Mac Studio fits the AI use case but not other ones so much.

Well also these chips originated in phones, where they kinda had to integrate it. And the quicker RAM and disk access are pretty nice.

Different tiers within the same generation are much easier to compare than across gens. Apple could benchmark them all and name them accordingly, but even that's misleading because it can be workload-dependent.

For the teen's laptop, you can simply get the base model. Even a base M1 is more than fast enough.

I remember this but never looked into it enough to get what the point is. They still sell it with an M2 chip. "includes six internal PCIe 4.0 slots for expansion. It does not support discrete GPUs over PCIe." uhhh, so in case peop

There are already big servers designed for huge single databases, for example the 8-socket Xeon types. Tbh I don't understand exactly why RAM is such a concern, but these machines have TBs of it.

We have the combo right now, hoarding in assets. Inflation doesn't make rich people/corps spend more, just invest it differently.

The article does a good chunk of fear mongering, so it's hard to take the stats at face value. I want to know more details about that US vs China trade map. I've seen it before, and first off, it's not "primary trading p

I don't see why the economy benefits long-term from people spending/investing only to get the money off their hands. Especially when it gets parked in things like gold and real estate just cause those supplies are sorta fixed.

The monetary policy we have coerces people into passive investing, creating bubbles. When rates are low, you see bogus "tech" plays like wifi water dispensers, that's the scam the author means. Also makes taxes weird, e.g. wh

Maybe it's my eyes, but I really like having a high res display for terminal or anything else where I'm reading a lot of text. It can be low framerate or high input delay, though. 1080p on a small screen isn't bad, though.

I didn't try reaching out, I just wanted to play Shrek Forever After (for a very random reason) and gave up after 5 minutes of choppiness. Like I said, there's probably a fix, and I appreciate that there's community support,
