I agree that ELBs need much more functionality. In order to get around the lack of features, I only use the ELBs for SSL termination (well, and DNS, and autoscaling). For anything fancier, I've developed a coprocess that manages HAProx

I look at this a bit differently. An ideal team would be comprised of individuals who possess all three skill sets, but with different specializations. Having a pure "hacker" and a pure "engineer" in the same group is se

Roll your servers more often. If you have autoscaling set up, you should be good to go. Yes, this is harder for infrastructure servers, but you should automate the creation of those as well.

Some people find seasons preferable. I plan on moving back to Boston for that reason alone. The lack of seasons in SF makes me feel like it's Groundhog Day. I'd gladly take some snow in exchange for the other seasons. For me, summ

I know this is paranoid, but I keep coming back to this post that hit HN a few days ago: http://www.cypherspace.org/adam/hacks/lotus-nsa-key.html When you combine that with the beam splitter logo, things get a bit

I think that this is right. I also think that storing configuration information in environment variables doesn't scale past a handful of settings. I'm also not sure that it's the best way of storing secrets. If you're wo

I was thinking the same exact thing. I'm color blind, and Success and Danger look very close while Success and Warning are easily distinguishable. EDIT: After another read, I see that it was a typo in the article. That being said, is Primar

I have a couple other suggestions: 1. Put your dotfiles in GitHub 2. Consider using zsh -- the completion is great, and it's easy to build a great prompt. I know prompts are personal taste, but I'm enjoying mine: https://github.com/hoov/do

The two ideas are very different, but complementary. Boxen is about getting your MacOS environment set up with tooling. The author of the original blog posting is talking about how to automate the creation of a production-like environment i

I was under the impression that Django projects couldn't be deployed when they were bdists (because Django doesn't use pkg_resources). I agree the annoyance wrt needing the same environment as the target. We tend to have two platforms that
