The "rest of the day" assertion is commonly observed by people training, but I don't have a link handy. Here's one that shows a longer-term effect: http://jap.physiology.org/cgi/content/abstract/85/2/695 Essentially, incorporating resista

Not having to worry about it at the application level is nice. E.g., if you store dated snapshots of content, it's much easier on you if you can just store the whole directory, rather than manually maintaining hard links back to previous ve

Regardless of IDE support, code is structure and patterns. Monospaced fonts make it easier for me to spot that structure and observe those patterns, whether to simplify my scanning of the code, help me spot bugs (e.g., omitted punctuation t

Sure, they wouldn't want to, but they could. To take his point to a higher level: it would be much more destructive (in several senses) to have to rip out HFS+ for legal reasons than it would be to rip out Xcode. Lots more people depend on

I'd call AllegroCache and Elephant object persistence frameworks, not KV stores. AllegroCache can store persistent maps and sets, so you could use it as a KV store, but that's hardly taking advantage of its power.

I think his point still stands: this piece is full of shit. I'm surprised not to see "Sponsored by California Corp." at the bottom.

This, in a nutshell, is why I have turned down every offer so far to leave my corp job (attained through acquisition, amusingly) for a startup. The equity offered was simply inadequate to make up for the massive increase in effort required.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1314732/scala-vs-groovy-v... From what I've read, Groovy is monstrously slow. That alone should rule it out.

Go and read "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome". It made a lot of sense to me. http://cow.org/r/?603b (Disclosure: that's got an affiliate link in it.) Lots of people get misdiagnosed, have surgery, and end up right back where they started.

Sustainability is a nonsense if a comet impacts the earth. You don't run a service on one machine; you use redundancy to reduce the chance of catastrophic failure.

Your friends are flakes. Get as much ownership as you can (all, maybe, or perhaps just the code — it doesn't seem like there was a great deal of formality) and go it alone. They're not helping.

I favor a 'scratch' or 'junk' dir in each project. Source that I know I don't need now, but want to keep around. grepping for terms will often find a chunk of code I wrote that nearly solves a new problem. Version control is not so easy to
