It certainly wears them out. Hawiian Air has the highest number of pressurization cycles of any US commercial airline (at least as far as I can tell--ontime data shows up to 18). So far they seem to have managed it without issues. Another a

Back in the day it was mostly very verbose but extremely fast. Cobol was designed for batch processing on use cases like accounting systems. We used it on signal processing apps, which had a lot of data, mostly on tape. It could rip through

Southwest runs 3 to 4K commercial flights per day, which is about 1 in 7 commercial flights overall in the US. They depend on aircraft doing many short hops over the course of a single day: 7 or 8 is not uncommon. When things go bad it tend

That's not entirely true. Contracts ensure you agree on important stuff up front when it's easy to do so and that you don't forget anything obvious.

To be fair PostgreSQL 15 years ago also had a lot of problems storing data reliability. Some of them manifested as performance issues. I also heard a fair number of war stories about corruption with "large" databases (e.g., 1TB+).

It seemed kind of genius to me. The numbers look solid and easy to replicate. Talking about backup yachts is a lot more catchy than saying DBMS overprovisioning helps build fat margins for infrastructure providers. (OK, the second formulati

Wow, I didn't know that. The first time I saw one was up in the Enchantment Lakes in Washington State. We came around a corner in the trail and heard the squirrels making a furious racket high up in the Douglas Firs above us. I remembe

Pine Martens are beautiful. I've seen them several times in the US. Squirrels are terrified of them--they are apparently very efficient hunters.

I don't see how Scylla / Cassandra are real-time but ClickHouse is not. You can load event data into ClickHouse just as fast as Cassandra. The data are instantly queryable including pre-computed aggregates in materialized views. Y
