The article left out one of the most fundamantal topics of databases--clustering of data in storage is everything. Examples: 1. If you store data in rows it's quite fast to insert/update/delete individual rows. Moreover, it&#

SERIALIZABLE is ridiculously slow if you have any level of concurrency in your app. READ COMMITTED is a reasonable default in general. The behavior GP is describing sounds like an out and out bug. Dirty reads incidentally weren't suppo

I disagree. I'm a big fan of Chandler and his monumental creation, Philip Marlowe. Deckard is quite a different character. Just comparing the two, Deckard's role is to be a witness to Batty's dawning humanity (as well as Rach

Good quote. For me what distinguishes the film and makes it better than the original story is exactly the elevation of the replicants into fully sentient beings. Batty started out as a grifter in the original and became the center of the st

It's a little more nuanced than that. Developing home nuclear reactors is an example where the approach might not benefit society at large. Edit: Comment is off-topic but I've heard this phrase so many times it's triggering.

Not to mention big compression and big vectorization. I'm right this minute messing around with a trillion+ row dataset in ClickHouse. It runs fine on a VM with 36 vCPUs and 1.8Tb of storage. (AWS c5.9xlarge instance type, EBS GP2 stor

My safety tip based on decades of cycling: think of safety as a game of percentages, like baseball. Stopping in the blind spot of a car is a low percentage maneuver—do it enough times and you’ll get hit. I try to ride in a way that reduces

Drizzle failed because it didn't have a use case that made it clearly better than MySQL. It's hard to displace an incumbent DBMS, because they take a long to time to mature internally as well as develop a productive ecosystem.

I appreciate your benchmark and was interested to learn about how QuestDB processes TSBS queries efficiently. I work extensively with ClickHouse and it's always enlightening to learn about how other databases achieve high performance.

Agree. Or just load test on your own software, publish how you did it, and let other vendors respond for themselves.

I'm not sure which incident you are referring to, but Pepys was not a great human being in many ways. The fact that he revealed himself so deeply makes the diaries quite remarkable.

Hi, You don't mention how much data you have, what the arrival rate is, and how long you would keep it. You did mention you are familiar with ClickHouse. For datasets under a few billion rows you don't need any special materials

Funny, the committers were at an Amsterdam meetup last night and we were talking about ClickHouse Keeper. I don't think that's very high up the list of priorities for them right now. The focus is more on ensuring it is bombproof--

Right. We put a lot more effort into ensuring people get on-boarded and properly integrated. That's the hard part (on both sides) to making the distributed company model work. I don't think you can ever do enough on that. We owe a

(Sorry for the delay, on the road.) We're a US C-Corp. Our founders are spread out over the US and Europe. I'm not one of them myself, but rather joined later. The flip from UK to US took 2 months end-to-end and cost close to $100
