I had never heard of Sterling engines before, so I found this quite fascinating. I have a question though to whomever may offer an explanation. Towards the bottom of page 1, the article explains that "[w]hen pressurized helium on the top si

Having finally had the chance to attend last night's talk with Peter and Max Levchin, I can say I was thoroughly impressed (by both of them). I believe he (well, both of them, honestly) has a genuine desire to help improve the world on mult

Well, it's T-Mobile (who actually uses T-Mobile??) and not AT&T or V, but it's about time. Always find it ridiculous that there is no cell phone signal on the Sand Hill Road. Even everyone I call back to explain why I lost signal comm

Not entirely on-point, but there's a remarkably fascinating documentary I watched on Netflix one night called "Helvetica." Check it out.

Hm. It's working fine for me right now. Use Dropbox. Works flawlessly (although I suppose syncing can be a bit slow).

Agreed: that's exactly the part that caught my eye too, although I didn't think of the analogy to superconductivity. Good call!

Doesn't HN have an anti-crack mode you can activate? :) As for twitter, you're left to your own devices of self-control and common sense, I suppose. :)

I know this isn't exactly typical HN-type material, but when I accidentally stumbled across this guy's photo stream, my mouth literally fell open. What's most impressive is that -- at least with his Eiffel tower panorama, and, presumably, o

I agree with you that many people have this fear. But it's a logically inconsistent fear: (1) As I mentioned, inability to access the cloud with Dropbox and like services -- or government/organizational intervention thereof -- does not im

I'm a little puzzled by peoples' fears about "the cloud." Frankly, I'd far rather store my data in a distributed system, accessible by all my devices, rather than storing everything in a single losable/stealable/breakable device like a lapt

They were testing this system for a long time. It's nice to see it finally roll out. Coincidentally, it looks like Apple will implement NFC (RFID?) in the next-generation iPhone 5 and iPad 2. It's starting to look like 2011 could really b
