That gives me a good intuitive picture. I'd really love a basic online simulator where I can plug in portfolio characteristics (eg percent of calls Vs puts, ATM Vs OTM) and simulate an equity curve over the last ten years. I could buil

Rock throwing is a traditional hunting technique used by Aboriginal Australians. Think about the scale economies. You have a tribe of 10 individuals all throwing rocks at a single being without having to close distance and risk injury. It a

I get your point on the definitional nuance, but why don't we have a fallacy for people who assume that something won't happen? Or is this also an instance of the slippery slope fallacy - asserting that A necessarily leads to NO

The slippery slope fallacy (which I see made the list) is often abused in discourse to argue against anyone proposing that A could plausibly lead to B, even if the person thinks there's a fairly low probability of it playing out. I wou

The part about synergy between faculties is accurate. Having strong pure math academics helps out the various applied math departments in indirect ways that I've seen. This is a shame. Pure math is a discipline with the most out of wha

So what if vaccine makers and distributors make a few billion in profits in return for saving the world from economic ruin and millions of deaths (and I'm not talking about the specific company in the OP). Let's pick a more deserv

This is motivated reasoning on his part. If the question at hand is "is the world getting better?", then excluding China makes no sense in the pursuit of answering that question. It's also ridiculous for him to say that China

I think this whole episode might cause the next market sell-off: (1) fund degrossing as the initial driver - already happening (2) everyone is being reminded of 99/00 mania (3) uncertain regulatory environment surrounding trading (4) w

Jason Hinkel's article raises some good points but is hardly a valid rebuttal. It's extremely weak. I'm still firmly on the side of Pinker's narrative, which clearly fits the data far better. (1) Hinkel falsely concludes

I think the timescales thing you mention is important when interpreting articles like this. The only quant strategies that are sucking are the long horizon, scalable ones available to public funding, which get articles written about them. S
