Totally depends - both my teenage daughters are VERY gunshy of photographs in general, and social media especially. We stopped posting anything relating to them ~8-10 years ago. If we were avidly sharing, they would hate us for it.

Forget friends - random strangers in public. The slightest hesitation to "praise DJT" and you'll end up on the dox/fire/harass list.

I've never been able to write (code or prose) while listening to music. I get too distracted. OTOH, watching a TV show (or listening to music) really helps with exercising (both starting, and pushing myself). YMM (and probably does) V.

Agreed. It's next to impossible to actually connect with people about non-work topics. Way too many possible landmines, unless you really, REALLY click about a couple of topics.

Yeah, it's not exactly that simple.. I worked ~15 years at an EDA company as a SW developer, got laid off in my 50s. I had a couple of people I connected with, but both of them had already retired and moved on by the time that happened

Yeah, the "buttons that move as the page loads" is the single biggest thing I hate about the modern web. I go to click one, and in that instant, it's moved and replaced by a different one that I didn't want to click. The

Interesting. We bought a bunch (5 pack, 6 pack?) from Costco IIRC about 3-5 years ago, and they all take 2 AA batteries, which is great because we've doubled down on Eneloop batteries for everything possible..

That would create a lot of work for corporate lawyers to create shell companies, merge/push-responsibility-onto/unmerge transactions, selling of "waste cleanup credits" by companies who then quickly go bankrupt (after th

For certain values of "always". I feel many of the original tech startups were genuinely interested in research, pushing limits, etc. Intel/AMD weren't "evil" as far as I can tell - nor the EDA infrastructure.

We've tried vision zero here (city in CA), and it's resulted in constant driver aggravation due to slowing down commute traffic, worse driving than before, and more traffic fatalities than before. Helsinki may be a lucky coinciden

As an oldtimer (Gen-X), I can't even with that mode of use. My thumb (is that what you use?) cramps up when trying to do that even a little.. I guess 30+ years of typing will do that.. The best I've done one-handed is type in my p

Depends on the topic - for politics, seems reasonable. When I'm following a few FB groups for a specific car model, because all the latest stuff seems to show up there, it's not quite as bad.

Agreed. The other problem is connectivity - if you aren't close to a hub you can actually get to, and that BART didn't connect south along the east bay until very recently. I once looked at how long to get to work by public transi

My kids (CA high school) were incredibly stressed with a heavy workload that seemed mostly pointless and specifically, teachers who didn't care and students who didn't care as a result and used AI and cheated whenever possible. Bo

AIUI, if you made an LLM deterministic, every mostly-similar prompt would return the same result (i.e. access the same training data set) and if that's wrong, the LLM is just plain broken for that example. Hacked-in "temperature&q

There are pragmas you can give to a compiler to tell it to "expect that this code path is (almost) never followed". I.e. if you have an assert on nullptr, for example. You want it to assume the assert rarely gets triggered, and hi

This. Every "AI is greate" response seems to be from someone doing web development - something I've intentionally avoided ever since I got tired of it around 2001, and hope to never have to do again. We write C++ code in a ve
