A prime example of how metrics of inflation are absolutely and utterly absurd, and generalises to domestic housing as well as commercial property.

I know this is nuts, but I recently bought a thinkpad x230t from 2012 when my StarBook died after a year, and it is the best laptop I've ever used.

Small fry, I saved a public sector body $1m/year by doing this and rightsizing the kubernetes hosts. :D

That's exactly right. It is just the variety of new ways in which common people get fucked that is dispiriting, with seemingly nothing capable of moving in the opposite direction.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking that the greenhouses would be arranged in a circle, so there'd be a sweet spot in a ring at the very least. But it does sound rather.. difficult. I suppose that sweet spot would also not be in a fix

One assumes the greenhouse collectors can also be used for food production - if so, this becomes more space efficient than PV by a long way, potentially.

It is a great shame that we have come to a no-win situation for artists when VCs are virtually unable to lose.

Same, it was a good era of Labour policy, regardless of what people say. I don't think "experts" are always what they're cracked up to be. Partisan writers funded by anonymous third parties etc try to put themselves on a

True - the UK's NHS was a product of people realising there would never be universal health care if it was left to the market.

Opex is a valid form of public spending. Paying people properly ensures they remain as public servants.

Back in the day this stuff was recognised. In 1983 Labour's manifesto pledged to abolish the secret services and that was part of the reasoning.

No, they have always been the party of the elite. They pander to the "bread and circuses" crowd because they'd never get elected otherwise. The ingress into politics has a vicious filter that works against working class peopl

Whatever can be measured can be managed, but not everything that counts can be counted. I'd be interested to see international comparisons and closer attention paid to more subjects than English and maths, as well as psychosocial devel

Unfortunately Labour (with the exception of when they had Corbyn in charge) are habitually authoritarian. The mark of a party of lawyers, perhaps. So, no real opposition.

The joys of mandatory obsolescence. Forcing handset churn is environmentally irresponsible. Maybe it is time for landlines to get SMS so people don't have to rely on mobile infrastructure? 5am sentiment but it'd be nice.

Marine plywood is a thing that obviates the problem somewhat. Admittedly though, a very very expensive thing. When that's factored in, you may as well build with straw bales. (really, it is great, and much cheaper)

Not so. If you want high thermal performance in a building, insulation (therefore thickness) is crucial in the entire building envelope. As the beardier building retrofit types say, your house needs a hat (loft insulation) boots (floor insu

Where climate change is concerned, there's not a cycle, just a massive decline. The problems and solutions have been known since the 1970s. Here's an example: a 1977 report detailing how the UK could satisfy its energy needs with
