It's an interesting project, but in my 6+ years of Enterprise .NET development, I've yet to work in a single shop that released a production .NET application that wasn't written in C# or VB.NET. Even F# seems to be very rarely deployed. It'

Slightly off topic, but I tried tweeting this post and Bit.Ly reported it as a phishing site, you guys might want to look into that. Another person had the same problem. Here's the shrunk URLs: http://bit.ly/pvv11g http://bit.ly/okHtiC

The author seems to be focusing his argument primarily on productivity and tooling. In that regard, I agree that C# and all the surrounding OSS has surpassed vanilla Java and is starting to catch up to Rails. However, he neglects to mention

Given the huge growth of the site in the first few years and the relative inexperience of the founding team with problems of this magnitude, I expect the story would have been the same with Python, Java, .NET, etc. The simple Web Server -&#

Paying above market salaries is also a slippery slope. If your salaries are too high, you can send the wrong message about the quality of the work environment. I live in Dallas and over here the shops that pay a lot tend to overwork you, th

Humans act a lot like apex predators in their environment (e.g. Lions in the Serengeti, Wolves in Yellowstone). It's just that our environment happens to be the entire planet. We dominate the food supply such that only animals that stay out

As a current .NET developer that used to do Java, it seems like Scala includes a lot of things that C# developers have taken for granted for several years. I can see where it goes a bit further though, and I'm excited to see the community a

There's another hidden cost that they didn't mention in this article: benefits and employment agreement requirements that vary from state to state. We had a few colleagues that telecommuted from California in a startup that I worked at 2 ye

Good article with a lot of great tips. But I'd like to see a follow up that elaborates on the practice of hiring experienced developers who don't know Ruby. Many of these questions wouldn't apply in that case and it would be hard to detect

I wish they had done comparisons of commuting via public transit rather than driving. I have friends in NYC and SF that routinely commute 1.5 hours on the train and don't complain about it one bit.

I imagine some of the top level programmers at Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc probably earn in the mid six figures. But just like executive pay, there's a point where the bonuses and profit sharing make up the vast majority of your compen

I like the concept and it seems like you've already got a handful of good ideas there. For a nontechnical guy you did a great job! The design isn't bad except for a few things: 1. The choice of the "Yanone Kaffeesatz" font. It just doesn't

Agree on this, but find a replacement (or firm) that will be willing to take on the project and work with the investor to make sure it gets done.

I really like the approach of "Contract-to-hire" developers but I've often found it to be difficult in markets where most good developers have multiple offers at any given time. Also it's tough to do this when you're boot strapping and lite

Qlikview's options for getting data out suck royally. Your basically forced to use their native Windows client. Their web stuff is too immature to be viable.
