I'm looking at getting a Synology or QNAP server and using that for backups with a Samba based file sharing system. I have a server lying around, but a dedicated device would save on power consumption so I'm going to go with that. I believe

Clojure is on my list of languages to learn in 2012. I really dig the community and the fact that it runs on the JVM. I've been looking for a strong functional language to use for backends as an alternative to using Node, and Clojure seems

I felt exactly the same way. I don't know Python, but it's similar enough to Ruby that I could follow the post. I was able to grok it, but I think the points could have been made better by sticking to one language.

I work in a completely distributed team and I think it works well if you have the right demographic in your team. The one problem I see with the model, is that it does little for junior developers or interns that are just starting out. Ther

The retailer that tried to recruit me was led by a former startup CTO that was doing much of what you described to try to change things. Aside from separating IT, the other big change was to create a new campus/location with a better dress

There are lots of jobs for anyone capable and willing to do ASP.NET. But building a career on .NET can lock you into the Microsoft ecosystem in the eyes of many employers. Depending on how you look at it, that can be a good or bad thing. I

Here in Dallas, lots of retailers have their corporate headquarters here. I've done some consulting work for one of them in the past and a couple years ago one of them was trying to recruit me pretty heavily for their big e-commerce push. M

The fact that you're even asking how to be good at this is a really good sign. I wish some of the folks that I've worked under in the past would have done the same. There's lots of good advice in this thread. My advice is to find a way to h

The whole thing seems too incredulous to be true and feels like a PR stunt. If it is true, and it makes this guy's products even more popular, then I fear for fate of humanity.

I've considered buying a $50K car used after 2 years. Are there any brands you recommend sticking to when going this route? I know some of them just gouge you on the maintenance costs after 30K miles or so.

Ask around your work place and find some of the grey beards that got their start as programmers in the early 90s. You'll find quite a few that didn't study programming or CS in school, but got their start via company training programs in CO

Great comment, Dave. Would you say over the years that you've oscillated between points of the stack, based on the needs of your current team? I've found that to be the case for me. At my last job I did a lot of front end work, at my curren

But menstruation itself is a very big taboo in most parts of India. It's a subject only discussed among women for many reasons. In many traditional Indian families, the women are not allowed to many daily household tasks while menstruating.

I really hope that this becomes a trend and other cities follow suit. It's really unfortunate that many US cities have focused on having world class Business Schools or Law Schools rather than Engineering schools.
