Well, it's not only big SV corporates that are doing 5-7 rounds of interviews. In my experience even 3-4 year old startups with under 100 employees do at least 5 rounds - 2 coding, 2 system design and one hiring manager. The most commo

It's big in the data science world because of Spark. For general purpose JVM apps I see people mostly going with Java or Kotlin.

You don't need crypto for that. Cash will work. Or a system like India's UPI - direct, instantaneous inter-bank transfer, with no fees, via mobile apps.

That may be the idea, but in practice, companies don't even hire SREs and just have engineers do on-call rotations instead.

> On-call is a way for bad businesses to steal money from their workers by expecting them to work 24/7 without paying them 4.2x their salary. This is not entirely true. I think the fact that companies don't have to hire separat

I wonder if Facebook would be equally lenient to, say, Palestinians calling for violence against Israeli soldiers; or Houthis calling for violence against Saudi Arabian ones.

To be fair, that is a bit hard to read and some people probably just read it letter by letter in the heat of the moment. Maybe you should have put underscores or hyphens between the words :-).

I like reasonably-paced RPGs and strategy games. Some of the recent good ones I've played: 1. Civilization 5 (I know it's not too recent but I haven't gotten around to trying Civ 6 yet.) 2. Pillars of Eternity 1&2 - a par

When a section of Indian farmers imposed similar blockades on Indian highways, Trudeau was shilling their "right to protest" to pander to his Sikh voters. This despite the fact that the Indian protests were far from peaceful - dev

Came here to say the same thing. I was not aware of the artist when I read this book, but looking at his works, the name for the book makes perfect sense.

I think this is a risky take. Any company you work for will use dozens of tools and it is possible you will dislike one or many of them. Having said that, I'm tired of using Macs, and would love to work for a company that issues a Linu

They were surprised to see it "on HN". OTOH despite the poor quality, the article seems to have spawned a healthy discussion, so maybe it belongs here after all :-).

24 CRs can be huge in Amazon, depending on the team. It can take months to get a single CR approved and merged.

There are plenty of great engineers at Amazon, although most of them are long-timers. It's probably true that good engineers don't join Amazon any more .

I've found minimaps to be useful when you're also using linters or compilers - you can quickly jump to the next error by looking at the little red dots or lines on the minimap.

When I first visited the Bay Area in 2005 Hummers were all over the place. And not just the smaller H3s but the massive H1s as well. The next time I visited in 2013 I saw exactly zero Hummers on the streets.
