I think the solution is to install the Brew version of the Unix-land tools you use, then set your path to favor these over the Apple supplied executables. That's what I did for Emacs, find, bash, etc. and it works fine.

I haven't used my CD drive for probably 2 years, at least since my car can play USB and Bluetooth music. You can buy a USB DVD-RW for about $20. I am glad most laptops and small form factor PCs are doing away with the drives as default

Yes. I recently almost purchased one of these for $800 on eBay simply because I have a spare SSD and 16 GB of DDR3. I won't pay $2000 for a laptop from Apple that has these things already soldered in. In the end I still couldn't j

XPS is technically part of Dell's consumer line. The business Precisions and Latitudes are much sturdier. All of Apple's products are essentially business grade, and you're definitely paying for the premium. People tend to o

Which is exactly why the War on Drugs is so contested. Poll the population, and you'll get about 75% in agreement that it should be wound down or pivoted to a health issue. Even higher stats for the younger generations. However, you st

I've been hearing these NIMBY complaints for a while from SF Hacker News commenters and didn't really pay attention as I live in the suburbs of DC. Sure enough, I noticed a sign from a concerned citizens group at Starbucks the oth

As another java dev who is glad I didn't get stuck with .Net seven years ago, why do I want it not? We're doing fine: deployed on centos6, devs on OSX and win 7. Intellij licenses are the least of our problems, compared to the clu

You don't realize that many people (less since 2008 albeit) use home price increases as a piggy bank via home equity lines of credit. Personally I think it's financially absurd, but then again I'm a single guy. If I had 2 kid
