I've also tried to use a Linux VM on Widnows due to issues with Node, paths in various Scala libs, and a dozen other problems. Cygwin works for 50%, but not for everything. I've tried Win 10 with Subsystem for Linux (Ubuntu Bash)

I think it became harder to write true desktop apps once VB6 was killed off in favor of .Net with its higher learning curve. As bad as a real language VB6 and it's GUI builder were, it did allow even amateurs to write a decent workin

I was interested too with the Latitudes. The article is vague, but it does mention latest models. I just picked up an e7440 - new but a few generations old - from the Dell business outlet. The touchpad (along with the battery) is the bigg

Honestly, this has been one of the reasons I've chosen to avoid buying a home even though I could easily afford it now. Seems like, besides lack of mobility in a era of never stable employers, owning a home essentially weds you to your

Same, though I used to use Fedora. The Win 10 Linux subsystem is still a mess, though it is improving in beta versions.

It comes with the Linux subsystem. Honestly, I haven't had much luck with it as it is still lacking serious features. It has improved in beta versions, but I think it is going to be a while 'till it is stable enough to use instead

The 'sex trafficking' angle has become a straw-man for the anti-prostitution crusaders. Does it exist? Of course. But most non-biased studies show that it is not involved in the vast majority of prostitution related transactions.

It all depends on your own situation. I, myself, moved from the Midwest to a very high COL East Coast city 7 or 8 years ago. My salary has pretty much doubled, though I imagine at this point it is about $40K more than I could get back home.

Spot on. And really the subsidized roads and trains are less about getting fresh produce to the cities and more about getting the trillions of dollars of agricultural products to the sea for export, our single largest source of income by fa

I agree with you. I constantly hear (especially during election season) about how the blue coastal states are basically 'subsidizing' the idiots from fly over country - some statistics about tax payments and farm subsidies tossed

A few of the Midwest states in the corn belt consistently out performed the rest of the nation in the pre college tests that used to be given to most of the nations students, though part of this was due to the lack of minority students.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I've heard the claim that even pushing up tax rates to Eisenhower-era levels (without deductions) would still not solve the problem fully. Instead, we simply have a demographics issue: To

Interestingly, I remember in the 90s when offshoring really started to take off beyond just steel and some manufacturing, the response from the politicians was that BS about rising tide lifting all boats. Then somewhere in the last 10 years

Out of serious curiosity, what are these new apps that are using more and more RAM, at least for the last few cycles? It seems like 8 GB has been the default amount for most consumer PCs for years now. This is in contrast to 15-20 years ago

On a rooted Android I use Greenify for all apps that I don't want running while I'm not using. Without root, you could force disable the app when not using, but you would have to re-enable it manually.
