There's shift of context too. In our grandparents' generation, companies also promised to keep the workers around and sometimes to give them pension. There would be a steady career path based on seniority as well. Something along

My theory is that two things changed: 1. complexity. As time goes by, systems become more complex, leaving less and less room for people to introduce changes swiftly. It's just like George Martin had a hard time shipping his latest A S

It really depends on the project, or put it another way, the ROI. Then core protocols of a storage system or an OS kernel will benefit from formal methods, but I’m not sure a CRUD app will. Besides, TLA+ is not panacea in formal methods. It

I feel that the challenge of Lambda school, as well as other vocational schools, is that their courses are too specific for too short a period with too easy assignments. Take this curriculum for example: https://lambdaschool.com&

This is what I got from 1-on-1s with my coworkers too. Clear separation: Single people want to go back to office. People who have families do not.

Somehow I don't see people discuss this kind of tools from the perspective of managing essential complexity versus accidental complexity. Maybe copilot just increases the abstraction level of coding, so we can treat generated code as a

No, I don't think stack ranking is necessary. It, however, could be a consequence of bad management or of the belief that stack ranking is the most effective way of continuously improving teams.

Companies implement stack ranking because the management does not have necessarily visibility to valuate each employee. Those who can't stand stack ranking should either join a small startup, where visibility is not issue by nature, or

It looks a problem peculiar to Seattle as there are not many choices of hyper-growth companies. I can't imagine the same dilemma in the bay area, where one can switch from one promising company to another every week from weeks.

I’m sure you’re right for some services, especially infra ones, such as EC2. Some other services, though, should be built on top of EC2, EBS, Lambda, S3, and etc, in which case Netflix and AWS teams use the same infra, yet Netflix internal

What I meant was that Netflix built their platforms and services on top of AWS services, just like AWS teams. Yet AWS teams have brutal oncalls, while Netflix teams enjoy great work-life balance.

What I don’t get about Amazon is that AWS customers have way less oncall load, particularly Netflix, whose engineers could afford oncall 24x7 for weeks or months with perfectly normal work-life balance. Why can’t Amazon, the pioneer of clou

I really like Netflix's metaphor that they are like a sports team. You don't stack rank your team and fire the bottom 15% of your team every year, especially when the team members work well together.
