I don't see how that makes your case. The license comes with restrictions per the WSJ.

Given the board sees winding down the company within its mandate, they may just keep playing this game of chicken.

They don't have such a license...Stratechery didn't read his own source. https://www.wsj.com/articles/microsoft-and-openai-forge-awkw...

In theory, no. In practice, Microsoft wields influence through OpenAI's employees, who the board answers to in addition to the charter.

I assume their personal relationship played more of a role, given Sam led Quora's Series D round.

I think there's more to the Poe story. Sam forced out Reid Hoffman over Inflection AI, [1] so he clearly gave Adam a pass for whatever reason. Maybe Sam credited Adam for inspiring OpenAI's agents? [1] https://www.semaf

Very reasonable? Microsoft doesn't control any part of the company and faces a high degree of regulatory scrutiny.

This is wrong. Microsoft has no such rights and its license comes with restrictions, per the cited primary source, meaning a fork would require a very careful approach. https://www.wsj.com/articles/microsoft-and-openai-

It would, but a PR campaign like the one waged this weekend would probably leave Adam little choice. Sam clearly underestimated the board either way.

On the other hand, Sam & Greg had the opportunity to confront Adam about the obvious conflict and likely could have forced him to step down if they wanted him to. They made their choice. Zero mention about Adam & Poe in the leaks fr

Emmett's just a placeholder after Murati turned. I suspect he won't stay in his position for long.

No longer? Sam has never substantially dealt with the underlying code for OpenAI, compared to say Demis Hassabis. He resembles Brian Chesky & Joe Gebbia more than Nathan Blecharczyk.

The for-profit shareholders can only sway the board through the employees who count as stakeholders in the nonprofit, hence the PR campaign. The board's mandate remains upholding the nonprofit's charter—no fiduciary duty to invest

The nonprofit the board oversees doesn't have any shareholders and only answers to its charter. Sam & Greg allegedly sidelined Ilya shortly before all this went down, so Ilya probably felt he had to take drastic action regardless o
