I strongly prefer this approach, as long as the project is interesting enough to attract engineers, and allows you to assert the aspects you want to see in them. The coding project we give to candidates is to implement an open source Hacker

Same feeling here. I tend to feel underachieved a lot of time. Then I put my focus on doing some project/learning new stuffs, really enjoy it, feel empowered. Then the cycle repeats after a while.

It's hard to have a good initial reaction to someone getting fired, as it means something has been broken. But I agree with the post, a broken relationship may just happen because things change in a way we can't avoid.
