Sure the consequences might be different, but you still have to trust the other road participants just the same.

The same argument applies to driving any vehicle. e.g. When you're driving a car and you cross a junction/intersection - you're trusting the stopped drivers to not run a red.

Or perhaps those researchers in the 90s just whiffed? It's ostensibly the case for other RL problems that we've only recently crossed some compute power viability threshold. Maybe contemporary researchers with contemporary compute

It probably depends on how you define "best approach". For example in chess - sure, alphazero is better than stockfish - but stockfish is "good enough" (100s of elo better than the best human), without the cpu-cycle cost

If anyone is interested in a fun toy-program to learn Temporal Difference Learning on, the game 2048 is amenable to the approach - in fact it gives the best current results of any current AIs. It uses the N-tuple technique - an instructive

Wont the majority of the trip be over the fibre optic medium - which would require the speed of light (albeit in a glass medium), rather than the speed of electricity? This also implies that you could materially change that rtt number if yo

I'm not the commenter you're replying to, but I've often found the Haskell numeric classes (Num, Fractional, Integral etc) prickly. The almost , but don't quite, map to (mathematical) algebraic structures.

I'm reminded of one of my favourite HN comments on Haskell: 'There's something very seductive about languages like Rust or Scala or Haskell or even C++. These languages whisper in our ears "you are brilliant and here

It's also perfectly acceptable (and preferred) if the code maps cleanly onto some existing mathematical terminology. 'v' is more readable than 'velocity' in the correct context.

I had a similar workflow, except icc for release, which still outperforms gcc on certain types of codebases.

Another potential solution during rush hour would be route splitting - each alternating bus on the route is assigned to stop at even/odd stops (e.g. bus 1 stops at 1/3/5.., bus 2 stop at 2/4/6.., 3 at 1/3/

Also, some games had their achievements added after release (in some cases years). Achievements don't usually get backfilled to my knowledge, so any players with playtime before achievements will be underrepresented.

It's unsurprising this was patched out shortly after being made public. Despite the truncated rounding, the technique could probably still be valuable. Sampling multiple points in time, then analyzing the common multiples each time poi

It depends on the purpose of your debugging. If you know exactly where you want to go then, as you say, this has diminished value. but debugging can often be exploratory, in which case this feature could be a real timesaver.

How huge is the largest open-source group though? My guess is that it's a order of magnitude smaller than the large companies being discussed in this conversation.

Perhaps this is subverting the type-theoretic (in a CS sense) point being made, but in C++ you could quite reasonably write a function: template<typename T> T fn(T t){ return t * 2; } fn(4.2); //fine fn(&q
