I did this too, made switching my desktop to Linux so much smoother. I have a Windows laptop for my Windows needs and most of my gaming is fine on the Steam Deck, so I realized I didn't need to always boot into Windows only to use WSL.

It's about the level of education, especially around family planning/birth control, how easily women can refuse, what other avenues there are for people to keep themselves satisfied besides sex, and what people can afford. The wel

I wonder how much has been offset by all the bombings and oil dependent countries having to fall back to coal until they can switch to solar or another oil supplier (if they can afford to do either at all).

As usual, I find the AI-related discussion here to be hopelessly hysterical and conspiratorial. I get the impression that a large chunk of people have only read the title and assumed Anthropic is referring to recursive self-improvement in t

That seems to be somewhat of an exaggeration. These $800 models are obviously not for kids. The creativity is still alive in the price brackets that aren't targeting collectors. Custom builds that involve scavenging other kits for piec

I've run into some of the refusals to handle my credentials, but so far I've appreciated them. I was only handing over credentials that didn't matter, but it's still a good move, the chat logs are clearly stored somewher

It's been happening a lot recently, in both directions too. Hard to say if it's astroturfing or people making disposable accounts to say things they consider controversial without having to take the downvotes on their primary acco

You can find a lot of literature out there for tracking people based on WiFi signal strength. The very thing they use to connect ends up being a sensor that gives away some pretty critical info.

But this is missing the fact that the vast majority of starting jobs for artists/writers would be in the former category. Similar to how AI coding or automation hurts junior hiring more than it does senior. I found myself thinking abou

Currently it's a pretty big ask to look at the several hundred billion transistors and the interconnects between them to find what broke. Though, those capabilities are maybe just a few years out, funnily it's taking AI to make it

I work at one such research lab, right next to a very big city, with the ability to commute from said city. Similarly there are several in California, located near universities etc.

I see all this complaining from people in big tech nowadays, but I can't help but wonder, why act like the industry is just big tech? There are so many small companies, research groups etc that can pay a livable wage (just not as exube

I recently installed Kubuntu 26.XX on my desktop, was worried about having to use workarounds and giving up on fractional scaling to use it with my NVIDIA gpus (previously had to do this), but was also pretty surprised that it has been smoo

Agreed, the biggest takeaway from how much Anthropic puts into alignment, and still ends up with a model that can end up doing things that are clearly out of alignment, should be that alignment is very tricky.

Some sci-fi content differentiates between Artificial Intelligence, and Virtual Intelligence, where AI is a true "human-like" general intelligence that (often) has a sense of self and is capable of deriving+learning new things by

It's a problem in that it needs to be handled in data processing, it isn't a problem in that the impacts on science are not too bad compared to the benefits of those satellites.

I haven't had any problems with the Deck's matte coating, but if it really bothers you, you can replace the screen, they're $40, and the Deck was designed to be repairable.

I am reminded of the Sway tiling window manager. When I tried it, years ago, on NVIDIA cards it refused to start unless you passed a "--my-next-gpu-wont-be-nvidia" flag. I remember that even then that seemed pretty childish (parti

Agreed, unless AI progress slows down enough that it becomes reasonable to bake weights into circuitry, the conventional approach will probably remain preferable for encoding, at least on power constrained devices.

An orbital class booster isn't a booster that goes to orbit, it's a booster that is part of an orbital rocket stack. The important distinction is that the DC-X prototype was, at best, supersonic given the low altitude and flight t
