Similarly, in the early AOL days, there were several "warez" distribution lists going around which had the pirated software directly attached to the emails (not links to external websites). As long as the emails stayed in AOL, yo

Isn't this kind of what they're doing on Google Play, or what was done with Mr. Robot, minus the torrent? The first episode or two are free, then you either pay per episode or watch via TV subscription. I frequently download fre

That's a good question, and probably one I don't truly know the answer to. I've been here my whole career (~11 years), so I simply don't have any experience outside my company or industry to compare against. I imagine th

I'm a software developer working on point-of-sale at one of the major companies in this field. I've worked at the same company for my entire career, and have no plans on leaving. I've found that the retail software industry

I've been watching your posts for quite a while at osdev.org, sortie. Great job sticking with this! So many people (myself included) start on an OS dev project only to get bored or give up a few months in. For anyone interested in ho

Slightly off topic -- does anyone remember a boot disk in the late 80's or early 90's that would play voice from the PC speaker, saying something to the effect of, "Help, I'm trapped inside the computer"? I can

Speaking of CTRL-Z doing mean things -- VMware Workstation. Accidentally have the VM window focused instead of something inside the VM? Suspends the VM. So many times I've done this in the middle of a remote debugging session...

Brian Krebs' book Spam Nation talks about this quite a bit. So many people still buy prescription medications and fake watches and such through junk email. Enough that it still makes financial sense for the spammers to keep at it.

It is possible to "activate" this functionality on some phones as well. I have it enabled on my Samsung Galaxy S4, which is rooted, but otherwise is running the stock ROM (though not by choice).
