Can you elaborate? Perhaps you are talking about the Char8 ByteString instance? It was a mistake to declare that instance, I think.

Haskell also has first-class operators. Operators are infix, surrounding them with parentheses makes them prefix: (+) 1 2. Functions are prefix, surrounding them with backticks makes them infix: 1 `plus` 2. You can define your own, and defi

The 'Monad tutorial' linked in the article doesn't use analogies. Instead, it takes you through a couple of pieces of code that have an obvious abstraction, then shows you that these abstractions are all the same, and that th

Chordify is great! Their backend is written in Haskell, and part of it is open source as well: http://hackage.haskell.org/package/HarmTrace

Sadly we haven't open sourced the library (yet?). The actual implementation is quite a bit larger, and messier, than described in this blog post. Additionally, it's written in our own module system. So while we'd like to open

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in this thread, is that you can create custom builds of jQuery that only include some of the functionality: https://github.com/jquery/jquery#how-to-build-your-own-jquer...

This is very annoying on Spotify itself as well. If you use the 'radio' feature (basically random tracks based on some genre/artist), it often repeats the same track over and over, from different releases.

I've heard this argument a lot, and I disagree. If your software is changing a lot, that is where types really shine. Refactoring is a breeze when you have types: you just change the code you want to improve, and all use sites are poin

I think back then, the 'n' just wasn't very large, so O(n) versus O(n^2) didn't make much of a difference.

I just tried the first part of this (the ssh multiplexing) and instead of getting faster, 'git fetch' got slower (1.9 to 2.4 seconds). Any ideas why, and how I can debug/improve it?

This is a great release! I wonder about this, though: > The stack trace is now shown as a breadcrumb near the top Who thought this was a good idea? This leaves room for about 3 items, whereas most stacks nowadays are much larger. A norma

I have Adblock Plus installed, but comparing an Amazon affiliate link in Firefox with Adblock Plus, with one in Chrome (no Adblock Plus) shows no difference.

OK, so it wouldn't work if you're in a submodule. It could print a warning if there are no submodules. But if would still work perfectly fine in the majority of the cases. For those also annoyed, I use this git alias, which does what I want

It always annoys me when git does this: $ git submodule update You need to run this command from the toplevel of the working tree. I bet git knows exactly where that is. So go there and do it!

The C++ version can (and often will) use mutable fields behind the scenes. The Haskell version can't. So it is thread safe by default, while the C++ version might break some internal invariant if used from multiple threads. So even on such

I use the Firefox address bar as a lightweight version of this. Since it searches URLs as well as titles of sites in your history, you can just type (parts of) words separated by spaces to find old content.
