Hey nickjj, you may want to update your blog post to reflect that the Lambda timeout is now 15m, not 5m.

This is still the best essay I have read on the topic: http://www.aarongreenspan.com/writing/20130404/in-search-of-... I've left Silicon Valley since I read it. And having read it, I hope to never move back.

Wait, let me get this straight. You get $5000 of AWS Credits that don't expire and don't require any minimum level of spending by signing up for this card?

This argument would be persuasive if the NRA were literally a gun that kills people rather than an organization that lobbies for the robust protection of second amendment rights.

The issue with this argument is that "militia" had a different meaning when the Bill of Rights was ratified. Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1811: “[T]he militia of the State, that is to say, of every man in it able to bear arms.”

How would this argument not apply equally to anyone who supports the first amendment (because it can lead to hate speech that inspires atrocities)?

I largely agree with you. But I also care a lot about the politics of Google employees insofar as they exercise a tremendous amount of influence over both elections and people's ability to broadcast their messages to the world. Since G

Can someone explain to me how this is not like that episode of Arrested Development where they steal a dollar from the banana stand and then throw out a banana to "cancel it out"?

I'd think that writing an extremely widely used package manager is good evidence of your competency as a software engineer. Whereas in your analogy the qualification is totally irrelevant to the position.

It seems dogmatic to rule out genetics as one possible factor among many that determines life outcomes. I get that a bunch of other people in Silicon Valley will pat you on the back, but that doesn't amount to a winning argument.

If you believe that intelligence is at all heritable, then it would be an astonishing fact if low-income individuals had the same genetic distribution as high-income individuals. If you don't believe that intelligence is at all heritab

Pretty misleading title. US homicides are up significantly since 2013 (they rose by almost 25% from 2014 to 2016 before leveling off in 2017 and dropping perhaps 7% in 2018).

I'm not sure your reading of this is warranted at all. In any event, are you sure it protects you from criminal liability if you label something as a deep fake, then other people redistribute it without that label?
