Speaking of badware: last week I found Mac Afee installed on the laptop of a relative that I manage. I assured me that he had not installed it himself (I had not installed anything actually). Could it have come from windows updates ?

You can still use an Android phone without the Google Play store if you use a custom rom such as LineageOS. I do not not have a Google account set on my Motorola E LTE.

If you want to use one on your Android phone without Google apps, then only Telegram will work. I use Tox with my geek friends and Telegram with my less geek friends. I also plan to give a try to ring.cx
