Telstra's subsidiary in New Zealand was also at the bottom of all rankings, but this week they installed the Google cache boxes to mask the issue. YouTube now hits 3-5Mbps for me. At start of playback it appears to burst a chunk of video, a

I come from a roughly similar background, I started out fresh out of high school in tech support, though had done some programming on the side. I enjoyed programming more though, so gravitated towards that, and so glad I did. Most of the pe

While paying a source for information is ethically questionable and on the level of the tabloids, I think it's fairly clear from the article they posted later that Gizmodo's intent was getting a scoop. On the flip side of what you're sugges

The DOJ settlement hardly forced Microsoft to stop innovating or investing in the browser. Microsoft did that on their own, and are now finding it hard to just pull even with everyone else. Nice revisionist history though, the DOJ is a nice

Damn you Blizzard, for making games I love to play. I just got myself off WoW. Now this, and Diablo 3 coming later... In other news, the Korean economy is expected to contract from August.

I can only hope the OS X support will work in Windows 7 x64. My desktop is a monster of a machine, my 2,1 revision MacBook Pro, not so much.

I hardly think this problem is unique to the US, media just talks about it more openly. Despite their "cyber-war" offensive units, I venture that the Chinese are just as vulnerable, if not more so. At least the military culture in the US al

I learned Vim inside and out because it was the only Linux console editor at the time that did syntax highlighting, and it kind of stuck. Also, working in 80x50 with only the editor open for a couple of months kind of gets you into the mode

Look forward to seeing where this goes. My girlfriend asked me to teach her Python - she's doing her masters in statistics, so she's coming from an R/SAS background. Apparently Python is useful to know in the investment banking arena, which

I run Windows 7 as my host OS, and use Sunacle's VirtualBox to run my VMs, as it supports 64-bit guests. I have a MacBook Pro if I need to do OS X stuff, but it doesn't have the grunt to serve as my main dev environment any more, sadly. And

A fair number of programmers I respect have broken the law. Sometimes the law is an ass, and needs to be broken. And sometimes you're just so damn curious you have to figure out how it works, and you break it for the rush of both solving th

You must have started at a decent salary... I'm earning 8 times more than I did when I started, also 12 years ago (six figures now). Though to be fair, I didn't have a degree when I started and began in tech support.

Hardware acceleration is the Microsoft crutch for shitty perf :) Not that I'm bitter, stuck in VS2008 all day on a circa 2003 machine, stingy ass employers. They can afford to pay 100k+ for engineers, but not to give them decent machines..
