You’re right; sexual coercion is morally relevant, similarly to how certain crimes can be up-charged to “hate crimes” based on intent. But then one can’t argue that some forms of economic coercion are okay, while others aren’t (ie. sex-rela

So the issue is so-called “economic coercion?” By the same token can’t it be argued that work is inherently coercive, and therefore a form of exploitation? For example, I’d rather not work at all but then I’d be evicted. Can we ban work sin

I keep seeing more and more traffic to my sites from the fediverse. I think the centralized social network model is in deep shit, at least as far as the WWW goes. The days of zero interest money and investment based only on user counts are

I love that the title is a reference to a truly bad horror movie for teenagers from two decades ago. Thanks for the memories!

China could just stop selling cheap Chinese crap to U.S. companies. That alone would put Walmart and "Scamazon Crime" out of business and our economy would implode, no war required. As far as an AI war, I imagine dueling GPTs who

These things always disproportionately target non-Caucasian individuals, so queue future outrage article. See how well it worked out for Rite Aid, here in the U.S.

Then by that logic the software engineers should be prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter when their beta test kills someone.

Logic and morality are on two separate paths. IF the driverless car decides to kill your daughter because saving a van full of refugees was for the greater good, then it wouldn't be a question of what was "better," it would b

Yes, it totally makes sense for bike commuters to be run over and sent to the hospital by robotic driverless vehicles while billionaire entrepreneurs refine the AI models powering them — it’s a beta test after all, you can’t actually expect

It’s a privacy measure so that third party sites can’t see which page a user is coming from. It’s not necessarily anyone’s business to know the previous URL in a user’s browser history.

Virtualbox is FOSS as long as you don’t install the extension pack, so worst-case scenario it gets forked.

I would be concerned if the next version of VMWare Workstation was subscription-only. I think VMWare has some nicer tools around snapshots and networking, but if they want to move to a rent model I’d be back to Virtualbox in a heartbeat.

How dare you. We should go back to pre-Industrial Revolution levels of carbon output because mass starvation is a great ideal, also cheaper than Ozempic.

They could switch your A records and still MitM your whole site. Granted I’m sure that would only happen if their CEO was really mad, but it just requires too much trust for my comfort.

It just depends on what your hobbies are. $4k for a decent name-brand carbon bike is a lot of money to spend on a hobby, but sometimes hobbies defy justification. There is only a limited amount of time you can spend on this world. How to pr

Once you start doing 50+ mile rides all that tactility starts catching up to you. The benefit of carbon (if it’s good quality) is dampening vibration _without_ sapping power.

It’s not necessarily about “elite racing performance” for a lot of people. Carbon fiber frames dampen road vibrations a lot better than aluminum and are noticeably less “harsh” to ride. For road bikes which typically don’t have any shock ab

Are you serious? They don’t do checksums on your PCM firmware for any vehicle inspections I’ve ever heard of. I am talking about a software modification, not cutting catalytic converters off for 2 extra horsepower.

I live in a rural area with a lot of straight/open roads with visibility and little traffic. Driving 98 mph (since 100 is a felony here lol) shaves nontrivial time off my trips vs. the speed limits which are far too low anyway. If it’s

Finally. There really hasn’t been enough developer interest around unlocking car PCMs and open-sourcing engine management software. A bill like this would take car tuning from a niche closet industry to a ubiquitous hacking community. Most
