To be clear, I was ultimately able to export. My complaint is that at the time I was doing this (July 2021), the web client, phone app and then-new Linux desktop app had no means of export, which is something 1Password support acknowledged

I used to be a 1p fanboy, but the company has really deteriorated from my point of view. Once upon a time, my password data was stored entirely locally in a format that was well-documented and which I could access using tools like openssl.
