I just started working at a place where size_t is being cast to "int" all over the code, with similar reasoning. Thanks for the ammunition.

Are tax liens different from other kinds? It's my impression that if e.g. a lender repossesses, they sell the house, pocket what you owe plus fees, and have to give you the rest back. It's strange to think it would be different

Your edit is itself very interesting :) Did the Cornell affiliation of one of the authors cause you to change your opinion in a positive or a negative way, and why?

How ironic that now they are ... promoting "going native" Actually for me this is a sign that they are finally starting to Get It. I agree with your sentiments on the last decade but it seems to be improving now.

This is also good evidence for why you should release your data online, so it can be properly vetted Reinhart and Rogoff may reach exactly the opposite conclusion, given the embarrassing publicity. For me this is an illustration of why p

This seems highly surprising in a neighborhood that hosts - a few blocks away - the Folsom Street Fair and the even raunchier Up Your Alley. Can we have a link?

IMO she did a good job of capturing the Linux vs. proprietary system tensions a technically sophisticated user might experience. I've had (and have) similar problems myself.

This. I wonder how much of the controversy comes down to left vs. right brain, East vs. West Coast, liberal arts vs. engineering discipline thinking. Are we just siding with our "team" here?

It's nice that things have gone in the direction of XML and JSON lately, and many people devise formats that build upon those. I was thinking more of arbitrary text formats. Even if it's XML or JSON though, the existing parsers only handl

New file formats of all kinds are invented every day, often with some proprietary tool attached. Writing your own parser allows you to add value and/or interoperate with the proprietary system. Even in the cases where an open source parse
