Yes. In fact there's one idea that I'm sort of prototyping right now in which Java would be a nice fit due to WebService integration. Do I want or must use Java? Does not matter to me. The libraries (and their quality) help me write less co

DI is useful in the situation where you'd like to mock 3rd-party web-service (that usually don't have test environment themselves). e.g.: Integration with Twitter. If you don't mocked Twitter client API, you won't be able to write unit-test

I used VS.NET 2005 back in 2007 and been doing Java + Eclipse + Maven in both Windows 7, OSX, and Linux (Ubuntu) since 2008 until today. I also play with Ruby (and Rails as well) on my free time. Somehow I like my current setup. Maven 2/3 i

Correct me if I'm wrong since I'm no longer .NET regular (but was in the past around 2005-2007 ish). Lately the development in .NET revolves mostly around Sharepoint (customizing), cloud deployment, and probably Dynamics AX/GP/CRM. The era

Let's see how long until Phil Haack enjoys the non-MS tools :) The experience so far from ex-Softie seems to suggest that people will eventually leave MS ecosystems once they're outside the company. The evolution is as follow: Cheering for

Any books to recommend? I might need a few of them. Probably will need one that explains their products so I can get familiar with the field first. How about best practices and agility? Testing, automation, build/deploy strategy, etc... Btw

They're going to blog about "how we broke the rules" and probably write a new book about that. They're pretty successful with their belief so far and it's time to get more revenue from something new.

I think I'd love to have such environment. Simple and distraction free. I feel that as I'm getting older and priority changes, I'm no longer enamored that much by technology.

Smartphones and tablets are largely for entertainment, which in turn are designed to grab your attention to the fullest. They're kind of bad (there's always that other excuse: limit yourself) seeing how the majority users are hooked like a

Correct me if I'm wrong. Enterprise SaaS usually charge by the seat (with a few asking for discounts). So at the end of the day whether it is 3.5k customers or 15M users. They all pay. That is my point.

I wish more people hear your opinion. I'm on my late 20 and I went to my alma-mater library once a week in the past. I grabbed old books (Liskov, Bentley, Kernighan, some of the software engineering books, etc) a few times and I was surpris

That's 15M _paying_ users right there. 37Signals says "millions" of users, active, inactive, paying, and free. Numbers probably way lower than that (10% of paying users?)

Yes, this is only an example. There are a few things I'd like to point out to add to this example: 1) JAX-RS is still new. In the future, they might improve the exception handling or whatnot (so if you return null, they might decided to ret

Be careful with GSON. It by-passes your getter and setter. That alone creates a bit of mismatch because JAXB (which is used by JAX-RS) uses getter/setter by default unless you specified it otherwise. And sometime you do have some logic in y

I'd like to add a few things here. Jersey is an implementation of JAX-RS. It has 3 major pieces: jersey-core, jersey-client, jersey-server. (The name should be obvious what they are for). If you're writing JAX-RS services, you can return a
