My office has a mail shelf that overflows with Amazon packages every day (medium-size tech company). Similarly, my local news agent is now mostly an Amazon depo with a HUGE stack of Amazon parcels behind the counter awaiting collection. I m

Why can't I just pay for FB a monthly fee and as such they have no need to make money by selling my data or spamming me with crappy ads?

Uber could (and eventually will destroy) Lyft in one fell swoop. They're just holding back to appease the government atm.

Well duh. That goes without saying.

So people work hard all their life for their wealth (maybe they earned a lot or maybe they were just frugal) and smart people think it is okay for the state to take 100% of it away? And you think that's okay? I just can't get my h

Sure but I rarely hear people talk about class which isn't so visible as other things. You can be a black woman born to professors or a working class white man born to garage store attendants.

What about if you are white working-class man? Is a middle-class black woman less privileged than a white working-class man? What about short versus tall people? What about beautiful versus ugly people? The halo effect is well-known. The wh

Why? What's your goal? In all honesty, you'd be better off just working on a significantly large project that pushes your skills forward and learning as you go.

I agree with this but I think the responsibility for fixing all this stuff lies with the teams responsible for each app - they should be the ones dockerising apps, setting up monitoring etc - that way you're distributing the devops stu

You hate starting an AMI and having a simple script to connect to an ECS cluster?

by heisnotanalien 9y ago
I dont really get it. It seems like every company aspires to all of those values.

I get your point but the truth is if the government REALLY wants your data then they're going to get it. It's not hard to install a physical keylogger for example and you'd never notice.

Will there just be one company in the future called Amazon?

Your performance anxiety about failing at algorithms problems is making your fail at algorithm problems. You need to believe. Yeah, maybe you will need to work a bit harder but you can do it.

Women are doing well across the globe (okay, outside of the middle-east). More are going to school and getting higher paying jobs. Women in Senegal are certainly not free in the same way American women are. When I say, American women are mo

Women in countries like Senegal are less free to choose want to do and so this is not surprising. As societies become more prosperous and free, women (generally speaking) are less likely to be interested in careers in IT. Of course, women w

Nope. I didn't say I believe everything should be fine. Why can't I just pay a small fee instead of seeing ads? Why is seemingly no one toying with alternatives?

Say it's not true?! Search ad decline?! How will we survive?!

My point is that it's not really a great way of 'backing' up a database because typically you want the transactions after you've made the change as well.

Except you'll lose all the data since you created the snapshot... You've been able to do this for years on Linux with LVM anyway.

The problem I could foresee with this is that all/most writing prompts are just really irritating. A photo or something would be preferable.

You can find 600 calorie pizzas easily enough, which fit into a 1800 calorie a day diet just fine.

You just need to get use to the admittedly unfashionable idea that it is possible to like people for some reasons and dislike them for other reasons.
