Sure, but from an algebraic (categorical) perspective, taking kernels, co-kernels and images are the most fundamental operations you can think of. The question is: How do you compute them in an effective (avoiding full SVD) and stable way?

It's not unique, but it can be implemented in a way that is stable. E.g. SVD does this (but is quite overkill for the requirements). It's highly relevant from an algebraic perspective, hence it's curious that it's not co

As it turns out, the author does cover the rank-decomposition (under the name "Rank-Revealing Factorization") in his blog as well: https://nhigham.com/2021/05/19/what-is-a-rank-revealing-fact...

From a theoretical perspective the most fundamental decomposition is the rank-decomposition: A = X D Y with X,Y invertible and D diagonal. It's called rank decomposition, because you can read off the rank from A by counting the non-zer

Good to hear. I also learned a lot from this discussion!

Yes. But also MUCH cheaper. You loose (1) ordering (2) ~5% of precision of the individual measurements. In practice, this still allows for highly precise percentile calculations (<0.1% error), see the evaluation in the Circllhist paper.

There are a large amount of subtle tradeoffs around the bucketing scheme (log, vs. log-linear, base) and memory layout (sparse, dense, chunked) the amount of configurability in the histogram space (circllhist, DDSketch, HDRHistogram, ...).

Circonus Histograms solve that by using a universal bucketing scheme. Details are explained in this paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.06561 Disclaimer: I am a co-author.

Now that we understand this can we please put all system tools into /bin? Disk space for binaries has not been a problem for decades now.

Question for those in the Beta trial: Can you disable this feature globally for your account, or do you need to disable this in every document explicitly?

With every dependency, you are allowing a 3rd party to inject code into your project. This can end badly e.g. #leftpad - https://www.davidhaney.io/npm-left-pad-have-we-forgotten-how...

Thats a strawman. I hate right wing bigots as mich as you do, but I don't think Musk belongs to that crowd. Here is what he actually said: (a) censorship decisions should be made by courts not private companies (b) moderation should be

No shared memory. To communicate between processes you usually use sockets, to communicate between threads you mutate variables. This is a huge performance difference.
