My first bit of production Java code was an applet that used cobra to talk with COBOL in the Java 1.0 days. When I'm bridging new languages to Java codebases, I always wonder if this is the 'new hotness' I'll be driving

8000' is pretty comfortable from an air pressure perspective. In practice, I'll do 9,500' or so for longer durations in an unpressurized plane in the daytime. Lower at night unpressurized. Wonder if the event was at night

Helped on a ferry flight of an aerobatics plane from Denver area to Chicago area. The front half I was in had a ball compass, altimeter, and airspeed indicator. It has been a long time since I've been in something without any electro

I thought the missing escape would be the thing that drove me nuts since I spend a reasonable chunk of my day in VI. Turns out, it is the damn siri button above the delete. Not quite sure how I keep hitting it.

Good times in Jr High. Disks were expensive, but we found we could punch the 5.25" floppies in the school library to store copies of games on the back side. There were quite a few unremarkable software titles that got heavy usage.

We are rolling out Adopt OpenJDK 11 (and 8, for those who can't make the jump to 9+) LTS to a few hundred thousand folks in our org. Free as in beer. Passed the internal audits.

I remember when google staged previews on a web page, then asked if I wanted to sync 'that' folder. Near panic until I realized it was not shared.

Oh man - we had one of those tadpoles back in the dot com days! We got our Sparc Oracle/Weblogic stack loaded up on it just like our 'real' servers. Our CEO took it to a very important conference to do a live demo, took to

I worked for a company that required me to tell them about all personal software developed for a period after I left the company. I suspect the intent was to make sure I did not create competing software... but the terms were clear and had

No kidding. We were a 500 person shop that was gobbled up by Oracle. First meeting with Larry - we were all suited out. Walk in, he is in jeans and a teeshirt. He asked, 'why you all dressed up?' A very, very technical discus

The HSA is interesting in that the money you put into it does not go away. For those close to retiring, the funds stashed in one are still very usable after.

I was amazed at how quickly they processed my FOIA requests. Asked customs for my travel so I could match up some dates on my heavily stamped passport. Within a month or so, they sent me a decade of travel all cleanly printed out. I'

I've got an old Porsche 996 S4, and I can't say it is a fast car. (fun around the corners, but not fast). I had V rated tires which were rated for 150mph. Not silly expensive either for that matter. I've never driven fast e

It is scary how fast people can go down hill without water. We regularly go camping up on the MN/Canadian boarder in the BWCA - going lake to lake in canoes. Usually we pack in a filter (or chemical purifiers, way back) to make sure

As a pilot, I would. Most of the bug smashers I rent will be flying around 90-120 nautical miles per hour, so 5 miles out puts you 2-3 minutes from the field. Within one minute or so you better be setting up for landings, usually dropping
