Even in the US, our overpriced EVs are cheaper than comparable ICE. They’re mostly big, and compete with 20mpg models. At $4/gallon, you’ll spend $40K on gasoline to drive a new ICE car 200K miles. The EV premium is typically $10-20K

Tesla seems OK. I’m really spoiled by the “complete stop” feature. The worst (which is what most brands are moving to in the US) is when it’s completely unpredictable. Basically, half the time, the car unexpectedly accelerates from a stop

Out of curiosity, do they support one pedal driving correctly (i.e., let you set it and forget it, and never unexpectedly accelerate from a stop unless you turn it off explicitly). BMW used to, but broke it on the i4, and presumably all the

Even the Ford Lightning (by far the best work truck on the market) was modestly priced compared to other Fords. Ford claims there’s no market for “expensive” $60-70K trucks in the US, but go to any Ford dealership in the bay area, and they’

As far as I can tell, a software defined vehicle is one that has fewer computers in it for cost cutting reasons. There’s an argument to be made that this allows better integration between subsystems, and therefore a better user experience.

I think modern fonts include hinting software and stuff like that. If you produced a bunch of screenshots of the output at various sizes, and then asked an LLM to convert to ttf or whatever, I’m guessing that’d be OK. I’m not an expert in

The earliest example I know of for this is CLKSCREW, but security hardware (like for holding root CA private keys) was hardened against this stuff way before that attack. Has anyone heard of notable earlier examples?

If you do that, it expands your test matrix quadratically. So, it makes sense if you have infinite testing budgets. Personally, I prefer exhaustively testing the upgrade path, and investing in reducing the time it takes to push out a hot fi

For there to be a solution, there needs to be a problem. These bills are not addressing a problem. Assume the online platform has a video feed of my kid, or their SSN, or a zero-knowledge-proof of age, or whatever. Now, what will the plat

This is outlined in Project 2025 (which I have not read). As I understand it, the age verification laws are part of a three pronged plan to eliminate privacy, freedom of speech and freedom of expression online. The goals being to expand cur

At least for amdgpu, variable refresh rate is at feature parity for x11 and wayland. They use the same kernel drivers for that stuff. Touch has been working under x11 for 20+ years (even before the iPhone). I have no idea what you are ref

I recently spent 20 minutes reading forum posts and vague documentation because MacOS couldn’t confirm a .md file wasn’t free of malware. I could say some nice things about MacOS, but it certainly is not “cohesive” any more.

Perl frees memory. It uses refcounting, so you need to break heap cycles or it will leak. (99% of the time, I find this less problematic than Java’s approach, fwiw).

I’m surprised (unless they replaced the core tcmalloc algorithm but kept the name). tcmalloc (thread caching malloc) assumes memory allocations have good thread locality. This is often a double win (less false sharing of cache lines, and mo
