I think Joel's got the right idea. After about five years at a startup (that grew up a bit) I quit in January 2008. Just a couple weeks ago I signed on with a pre-funding company in SF. Most of the interval was spent hacking on my own proje

Have you thought about publishing a subset of HN's data so others can experiment with it?

I imagine the performance hit is pretty substantial but for things like VOIP or messaging servers this will make real HA possible on commodity hardware. Pretty cool.

I don't know the particulars of direct injection for gasoline but I'm pretty sure some of the above reasons aren't valid (at least on modern cars). A friend of mine has an E320 diesel from 2003 or so and performance and noise seem the same

"The Art Of War" is great, I read this version when I was 13 but I would still recommend it as a good place to start before getting another translation or other books: "Sunzi Speaks: The Art of War" Tsai Chih Chung http://www.amazon.com/dp

Actually probably not past the day you buy it, at least if you can put a dollar figure on the time you spend dealing with hackintosh-specific issues.

If the business is right go for it. I recommend a minimum of two years of personal runway.

A group of us had a space in Seattle and the cost ended up being $150 / month / person. That got us maybe 2000 sq feet of basement space. People used it as a project space, party space, and work space. I think a few things in particular mad

Looks mildly useful but I think it would be really interesting to use the context from WikiPedia to enhance the web results. Dunno if anyone does this.

Firebug Lite was indispensable when I was getting clipng to work in IE6. In particular I probably wouldn't have spent the time to make the page-scraping bookmarklet IE6 compatible without it.

I read through your posts but I didn't see whose data you used for backtesting, did you use Interactive Broker's?

Interesting, I hadn't noticed that feature. Pretty similar then, although I used a bookmarklet rather than a browser extension. Personally I prefer the bookmarklet because it works in most browsers and I generally don't use FireFox.

My memory from using Notebook is that you copied and pasted text and images into what was basically an online word processor. You might think of clipng as half-way between Notebook and Delicious -- the stuff you pick out of a page is kept a

Fair enough, I definitely plan to add a public face to the site in the near future. Regarding account "linkage", you might not be aware that App Engine apps can authenticate users using Google credentials but never see the credentials thems

If you want full-text search in the data store Google gives you App Engine you end up doing about the same thing. One thing though, when indexing text you definitely want to stem the words and remove the duplicates. You can implement a Port

I second pedalpete 100%. Additionally, I would like to be able to see what the app does for me before signing up. Maybe that's a live demo, at least a good intro video, but so many new apps roll by on HN and other sites that I usually won't

It looks like your site might be useful for planning hikes and such except that I can't figure out how to get it to work. I think it's probably about 50% that I don't know how it works and 50% that the UI needs some polish, but besides that

Hello all, A while back I got frustrated with the folders full of disorganized bookmarks I'd accumulated. After some thought about how to solve it I built an app that's working well for me. I'm soliciting feedback to see what I can do to ma

This marketing video from NeXT back in 90 or 91 is informative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9dmcRbuTMY They were pretty right about where the workstation market was going. Linus started Linux at about the same time. In the 17 years si
