In https://github.com/ipfs/go-ds-crdt , every node in the Merkle DAG has a "Priority" field. When adding a new head, this is set to (maximum of the priorities of the children)+1. Thus, this priority represents

IPFS is already used to stream (porn and not porn), mostly Chinese apps with 50k+ users at least. Not the kind of projects that make noise on HN etc though.

The upcoming release of go-libp2p (0.18.0) includes a resource manager that promises to improve this by effectively enforcing limits. Also, please re-implement it properly!

DAG size gets out of hand when many operations happen (akin to how a blockchain grows indefinitely). Nodes could however rely on some form of "consensus" to compact/reset the graph at intervals. But then you have invited a co

Hi Martin, I now had time to read more closely. Thank you for citing us! In our paper and original approach/algo (iirc), CRDT updates are applied from the bottom of the dag to the heads (older to recent). This is also what you propose

The idea of DAG-embedded CRDTs is far from new and was introduced here: https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.00107 (I'm among the authors) Unfortunately, the verification that the author proposes (not accepting new updates

Latest version of go-ipfs is v0.11.0, not v5.0. In any case, IPFS is not a "product", it is a number of protocols and layers sometimes used together and sometimes not (libp2p, ipld, kad-dht, gossipsub, bitswap, graphsync...). And

IPFS domaim is very wide so different issues affect different parts in different ways. One major hurdle is browsers not being made for p2p. We will need http gateways and other centralized compatibility layers for the time being, which are

Because it is not the hash of the file, it is the hash of a DAG that contains file chunks on its leaves. And this DAG serves the purpose of making content copy+verification simpler, while also protecting the peers in the network from abuse

There is a connection manager (that kills connections when they go over a limit), and I think there is a connection rate limiter that limits how many connections are initiated. Some connections are protected (those manually initiated, or th

The DHT had a big upgrade. Nodes detect their own connectivity status and configure themselves accordingly so that they are not a burden to the network when they cannot be contacted. This has improved DHT lookups significantly, along with p

This was written a while ago (2019-2020) and I would say most of the complains are at least innacurate today. While some of the criticism was valid (and many things were fixed), I find the tone and the personal attacks in linked pages a bit

It depends. For a start, newer versions of IPFS work much better, but the network still had a significant amount of older nodes making the experience worse for everyone. Luckily, this is changing as of late, it seems. IPFS shines when it ca

Maybe if IPFS had started today they would have picked Rust. Honestly I'm not sure why Go was picked specificall, but if you put things in the context of 5 years ago it doesn't seem a crazy choice.

Depends what exactly you are importing and for what. I suggest you ask in the forums and post a link to your project. go get -u is dangerous as it updates all subdependencies used to latest. Usually take go-ipfs's go.mod as a guide on

Go can handle 100k goroutines (green threads) without a sweat. This is useful for p2p systems in which you are connected to thousands of peers multiplexing several p2p protocols with each concurrently. You want to be able to switch threads

When running in such environment it is necessary to run configure IPFS with "ipfs init --profile server" which will prevent this from happening. Documented here: https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs/blob/
