You don't pick Rails as the engine for powering your API simply for the asset pipeline, you pick it for all the other stuff @macaw pointed out! If you hook up Sinatra and Sprockets, you are without Rails' ORM, migrations, generators, routin

Sweet baby rollerblading Jesus this misinformation is appalling. > In Rails you would initialize all of your application when Rails is initialized. You cannot depend on a Ruby or Python process being up for longer than an HTTP request/r

Couldn't you just hit the MixPanel API after the response has been flushed? It means responses are returned as fast as normal and you don't up the complexity of the whole thing by introducing other processes and potentially bottlenecking qu

This is dead on, however I say it's a client code implementation detail that the object the view is bound to is the same one other parts of the app are bound to. Two way bindings about marshalling data out of the dom into JS land, and unfor

This is super cool! I really like the visuals in your implementation, way better looking than my blocky vectors. You also get pretty great performance by using raw canvas api calls which by the looks of your code wasn't too unwieldy. You al

Great points. The design issue is a big one, and I think the main reason is that PSDs can be translated to HTML and CSS easily, but extracting a theme for a set of widgets is much harder. The widgets give you rich interaction and an easy wa

Clearly it's highly biased because it's not a newspaper article, it's a post on what I think. > People wouldn't query the DOM if that wasn't the most effective way of getting stuff done. jQuery has a UI kit, it's called jQuery UI. And h

The concerns aren't separate, thats the whole point! The validation and view logic is shared in "both" applications as you put it, so we either have to duplicate code or try and only put it in one place. This doesn't work or requires monume

Does it make sense for a user to have to go back through the entire stack of photos they viewed to go to the page before they arrived at the lightboxing page? Not at all. There is a distinct difference between usable states and modal images

Another vote for EveryDNS, they got bought recently by DynDNS but it seems as if that hasn't changed their offering. Great service.

I read somewhere that the problem of "syntax design", that is choosing how a language requires you to write it, is regarded as "solved", that is we don't need any more constructs or abilities in languages. Whoever it was said that the real
