The state farm insurance claim passage about the brick layer is great and doesn't depend on the rest of the book. http://infinitesummer.org/archives/608

I think it helps to read summaries or explanations of infinite Jest and not just dig into it. Eventually you get a good mental picture of the entire timeline, the rough details of how the dystopia works and how the story is told in a loop.

I liked the David Foster Wallace reader to start with. It was basically a greatest hits of his best material including a decent chunk of Infinite Jest.

Yeah, if Google were to abandon the licenses then it would mean they'd just be giving up on gaming indefinitely. I don't see them doing that as all the big tech companies want to control the family room. They're probably just

I would think it would be trivial for them to pay to let another service transfer the licenses. Of course, this would benefit potential future competitors' market share. So I guess they think it would be better to screw their customers

I wonder if it's just that a single 20oz of diet/zero sugar soda doesn't make a big enough difference one way or another. Likely not so good for you but not as addictive and statistically significant as say, alcohol, nicotine

My wife told me that having a cat on my profile was a positive: it showed I was at least responsible enough to take care of a small animal.

If she finds out the stethoscope is only used on cats though, she might not be as interested. "He's a doctor! Wait. He's a cat doctor..."

So how much of this increase is because of increase in car weight and how much is it "road rage" or whatever you want to call it? I definitely have noticed more aggressive drinking post covid and I hear about it more. Even a gas s

Problem being: opinion pieces are cheap and very entertaining if your audience agrees with you. Investigative journalism is expensive and can be boring, not to mention potentially bad for ad revenue.

Yeah. I guess it's supposed to imply a red vs blue state conflict. Proud Boys versus Antifa fighting in the streets! MSNBC fans firing tear gas at Tucker Carlson viewers! Reylo shippers versus original trilogy fans, hitting each other

This would certainly impact people with older houses disproportionately relative to the wealthier folks doing the teardowns, though. Probably a political downside.

It is interesting to think back on the websites we created twenty or so years ago that we looked at only occasionally. We would check on them every year or two without realizing eventually that the server hosting them would be junked. On th

I guess you can justify this if you just think of the price of concessions as part of the overall experience. It's really a $300 ticket but you get to drink 5 beers and have some bar food in the meantime.

I agree that cars are better, but are vacation destinations like Disney really better? If you see parade footage from magic kingdom in the nineties you'll see that the crowds are far less. Sure there's more variety, more thrill ri

I might as well repeat the overprotective parent perspective. Fatalities are higher if you're in a sedan in an accident with a pickup or semi. There are a lot of trucks on the road as well. Finally, road accidents are the one of the bi
