Heck, some scopes cripple their memory capacity which can be unlocked with a software upgrade. Curiously, Rigol, a test equipment company, recently updated their dirt cheap line (DS1052E to DS1054Z). The DS1052E had a notoriously weak softw

"We the NSA have prevented N terrorist attacks last month thanks to our surveillance program." Pretty compelling argument for them to be not making, IMHO.

Can anything twart "Large Terror Attacks"? Is there really a socioeconomical measure that can twart a determined attacker?

Vendor lock-out. And also because I saw Dave Jones do a teardown of one of these things. He tried turning it on with no SIM and it said "please insert SIM" instead of booting to Android.

"unobscured"? transistor level schematics are kind of unreadable at this scale. It's a better idea to represent them as blocks or at least at the gate level and notate the specifics like timing and such.

Pretty sure these devices don't work unless you use the correct carrier's SIM card--like, they refuse to boot.

This is huge, considering how simple the circuitry is. Based on the prototyping process, they have gone for an expensive impedance analysis DSP chip with 0.1Hz resolution and a relatively wide frequency range. If this gets adopted by a majo

Little bit of context: The "Transistor Man" was I believe first introduced in The Art of Electronics (great book btw, the third edition just came out). An extremely simple model of a bipolar junction transistor in the linear regio

A better "instrument" would have been LED(s). Real power, more blinky blinky. You could even attach a ultra lower power microcontroller dev board to it[1] and show the less technical audience "look! computer powered by spooky

I didn't mean inefficiency, I meant that not all of the energy can be delivered to the projectile because the delivery is rate-limited because of electric properties. Also, there is inefficiencies in play, such as the melting aluminum

Capacitors have really bad energy per volume figures. People underestimate how much energy chemical stuff has--gasoline, batteries, etc.

It's probably 27kJ measured by the stored charge in the capacitor... which probably aren't delivered to the fullest extent. You can see the wires jump--that's inductive magic in action. To get any sort of quick magnetic pulse

Old thread, but I thought I made it clear that I wasn't talking about data compression, but rather dynamic range compression.

The single worst thing that harms audio quality is excessive compression. It's ruining everything, I'd say. Heck, I'm sure everyone who knows their worth would agree that compression harms audio quality. Recommended reading:

Powering a relatively low impedance device like headphones at relatively high powers with an unbuffered op-amp causes distortion. The CMoy is a classic example of "bad" electronics design.

I personally find the force touch trackpad really spooky. It clicks in when I exert force, which is fine, and if I reduce the force without moving my finger, it clicks out, which is also fine. When I click and drag across the trackpad, the

Yup. I think it's not that hard to understand the continuous time fourier transform -- just imagine every signal ever can be expressed as an infinite integral of sinusoids of varying frequencies (the inverse fourier transform), and rev
