I once got some used wood for free from Craigslist…somebody gave away his fathers old scraps. One piece was a 2x4 from 1982, from RONA (a Canadian store) and it a very beautiful piece of pine. It was exactly 2” by 4”, and straight grain. Ob

Yes. The real threat may not be the extinction of humanity, but of creativity. AI is just harvesting the existing output of humanity. Once it burns through that it will just become stale, or produce vapid nonsense that we all ignore. So us

They’re API: Automated pseudo intelligence. The only people impressed by them are pseudo-intellectuals. The only jobs they will replace are jobs that required medium intelligence.

And I thought javascript was inefficient compared to C. Imagine running agents in the cloud to do simple stuff like extract one 3 digit number from a weather report for the temperature. The power, cooling water and infra cost requirements a

And what symbols it has, it reuses them wisely. The square brackets alone make it a winner. Array, list and strings indexing. Dictionary lookups. Slices and substrings. List comprehensions. The notations convenience of this alone is immense

If the distance is less than 600km then NVIS comms would be enough. A 100’ sloped antenna would do the trick, attached to the chimney of the log cabin. It would not have to be that high off the ground.

Touché. Or a simple voice link. Technically the only word it would have to transmit is “mayday”. Practically you’d need a voice link to make sure it was a real emergency.

As a kid I once saw a quicksort implemented in BASIC and it looked like magic to me. I thought how could anyone come up with this algorithm…. Then I saw it implemented recursively in lisp…it was the simplest most obvious choice to make, and

Terms and conditions forms online are such a joke. We thought the ancients were cruel and heartless but here we are signing forms we cannot comprehend and using them as a basis for denying people legal protections.

Would it kill them to put a radio morse code link in the cabin? It could be done with $3 worth of parts, plus a solar cell or dynamo. What is with this insane desire to rough it as living without emergency comms is somehow nobler than havin

A whole lot of evidence=a lot of hysterisis. That evidence may have been misinterpreted to support a wrong theory. While coal might actually come from organic matter from the Carboniferous era as you suggested, I think oil and gas may not.

Thorium is most abundant in India. It’s obvious why the United States will not want to push a technology that will benefit others and that it cannot dominate. Sure there’s seawater…but that is even more difficult to control.

The idea that oil and gas come from decaying organic matter is the prevailing theory in the west but some people including Thomas Gold had the idea that they come from the primordial material the earth is made of, and seep up to the crust.
